{"id":110245,"date":"2024-08-07T09:06:11","date_gmt":"2024-08-07T08:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bodexng.com\/?p=110245"},"modified":"2024-08-07T09:06:13","modified_gmt":"2024-08-07T08:06:13","slug":"police-military-didnt-fire-live-bullets-during-endbadgovernance-protest-says-egbetokun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bodexng.com\/2024\/08\/police-military-didnt-fire-live-bullets-during-endbadgovernance-protest-says-egbetokun\/","title":{"rendered":"Police, military didn\u2019t fire live bullets during #EndBadGovernance protest, says Egbetokun"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>\n<p>Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), says security operatives did not shoot live ammunition at protesters during the #EndBadGovernance demonstration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun said security agencies did not deploy \u201cexcessive use of force\u201d during the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IGP said some security operatives were attacked during the protest, adding that police officers, who were injured, are currently in critical condition at the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Egbetokun described the reports of police shooting at unarmed protesters as \u201cfake news\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe police and the military, and indeed no other security agency involved in the management of this protest, have deployed excessive use of force,\u201d the IGP said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInstead, what we had were attacks on security agents during the protest. From our record, there was no shooting incident by the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe police or military did not use any live ammunition in the management of these protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInstead, we have had cases where our officers were injured critically and are in critical condition in the hospital as we speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will dismiss that as fake news and very wrong allegations. We didn\u2019t use excessive force at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigerians have taken to the streets since August 1 in what they call the #EndBadGovernance protest, demanding solutions to the various challenges, including the rising cost of living and insecurity in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the protest has turned violent in some parts of the country, resulting in the looting and vandalisation of properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The claim made by Egbetokun that security operatives did not shoot at protesters is different from what was experienced by TheCable during the coverage of the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, TheCable\u2019s journalists experienced how police officers shot live bullets at protesters at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International Nigeria said over 10 protesters were killed by police in Kano during the protest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), says security operatives did not shoot live ammunition at protesters during the #EndBadGovernance demonstration.
