I won’t beg you to release me — Nnamdi Kanu tells FG
The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu says he won’t beg the Federal Government to release him following the judgment of Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Kanu stated this in a letter dated August 25, 2023, and signed by his lead counsel, Mike Ozekhome.
The IPOB leader said begging the FG to release him would be an insult to the memory of the late Pa Mbazulike Amechi, who despite his age and ill health pleaded with the government to release him, but the FG refused to honour his wish.
In a statement issued by Kanu’s counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor the FG was accused of detaining Kanu illegally and unconstitutionally.
Ejiofor said, “Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu used the opportunity offered by the visit to extend his heartfelt gratitude to all people of good conscience and groups calling for his release.
“He however, observed that many people may not have understood the peculiarity of his case, but proceeded to urge us to clarify that he has been effectively and validly discharged by the judgment of the Court of Appeal, delivered October 13 2022, which said judgment also prohibited his further trial and detention. Therefore, there is no charge pending against Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu before any court as of today.”
He stressed that Kanu won’t beg the FG for his freedom because the court of appeal had already made a pronouncement in that regard.
“Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unequivocally stated that begging the Federal Government to release him at this point is an insult to the memory of late Pa Mbazulike Amaechi, who despite his age and ill health, repeatedly travelled from the South-East to Abuja, begging the Federal Government of Nigeria, to honour his dying wish, which request was treated with greatest disdain by the Federal Government, and was also not honoured.
“Thus, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is of the firm view that he does not need to beg the FGN to release him. The Court of Appeal has already made a pronouncement in that regard and that pronouncement has remained sacrosanct till date,” Ejiofor said.
He urged Nigerians to call on the Supreme Court to set down a date for the hearing of the appeal filed by the Federal Government.

FG shuts Eko bridge, ramps for eight-week repairs
The Federal Government has shut down the Eko Bridge and ramps for eight weeks to resurface the essential asphalt.
The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, made this known in a statement on Saturday morning in Lagos.
Kesha added that the closure will take effect from Friday, September 20, to Wednesday, November 20.
The statement read, “The Federal Ministry of Works plans essential asphalt resurfacing work on the Eko Bridge and Ramps for eight weeks, effective from Friday, Sept. 20, by 7.00 a.m., through November 20.
“The closure will be full at some sections of the bridge and partial at other sections.
“This critical project aims to improve road safety and enhance the driving experience of motorists.
“The work involves milling of the existing asphalt and relaying new asphalt on the bridge and Ramps. This will address wear and tear and ensure a smoother, safer roadway.”
According to her, due to the closure, there will be detours and alternate routes for drivers.
Providing information on how to navigate the area during the closure, she said motorists going to the Island from Funsho Williams Avenue should use the service lane at Alaka to connect Costain and access Eko Bridge.
“Island: Access Costain to connect Eko Bridge and link Apongbon
“Apongbon inwards Eko Bridge: Link Costain to access Funsho Williams Avenue
“For Costain inwards Alaka/Funsho Williams Avenue: Pass through Apapa Road from Costain and link Oyingbo to access Adekunle, then link to the Third Mainland Bridge
“Surulere: Use Costain to link Breweries inwards the Abebe Village to connect Eric Moore/Bode Thomas,” she said.
Kesha urged residents and businesses in the affected area to plan their travel accordingly. She assured the public that appropriate signage and traffic control measures would be in place to guide drivers and pedestrians.
She apologised for any inconvenience this might cause, saying that she appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as the ministry works to improve the country’s infrastructure.
