Turkey deports 103 Nigerians over expired visas, irregular migration

Turkey has deported 103 Nigerians over migration-related issues.

Catherine Udida, director of migration affairs, National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), received the deportees at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Friday.

Udida, who was represented by Tijani Ahmed, federal commissioner, NCFRMI, said the commission expected 110 deportees but received 103.

“Some of them have been in the deportation camp for some months, and now that they are here, we are hoping to follow up on all the allegations gathered in their profiling,” Udida said.

The director said some of the deportees alleged that their passports were seized.

“We are going to follow up with the Turkish authority because the passports are still the property of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Udida said.

Arinze Stone, a deportee, said Turkish authorities arrested and detained him in a camp for about six months.

Stone said despite living in Turkey for some years, officials frustrated his resident permit renewal after the European Union (EU) started paying the Middle Eastern country for illegal immigrants.

“Each day, the European Union pays 120 euros per head of immigrants in the immigration camp,” NAN quoted Stone as saying.

“Ever since I had been in Turkey, I always had my resident permit renewed.

“It just got expired and the Turkish authority collected 700 euros from me for tax and insurance and then cancelled the renewal.”

Moses Emeh, who said he was arrested and put in a dungeon for 11 months and three weeks, alleged the same treatment.

“I was told that if I did not sign the deportation documents, I would have to stay in their custody for one year to two years, after which I could be released and given immigration documents to sign, then be reintegrated into the system. But, they never fulfilled that,” said Emeh who has a registered company in Turkey.

“I also know that occupying a territory without a permit is a crime, but mine was forcibly terminated twice, and I took the case to court. Since my case was already in court and the court was yet to preside over my case, I don’t think it is right for them to deport me.”

Bashir Garga, the north-central zonal coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), assured the returnees of the government’s readiness to support them through collaborative efforts of all relevant agencies.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed-landed in Kaduna on Monday.

Some residents of Igabi LGA of Kaduna had said they heard a loud sound from the scene of the crash around 5am.

A team of NAF officers arrived the scene soon afterwards and cordoned off the area.

Edward Gabkwet, NAF spokesperson, said in a statement that the UAV “experienced a mishap after take-off for a mission, at a location near Rumji Village and about 15 Km from Base”.

Gabkwet added that there were no casualties since the UAV was unmanned.

“Since it is an unmanned vehicle, there were no casualties on board or on ground. Preliminary investigation has since commenced to ascertain what may have caused the mishap,” the statement reads.

“Nigerians can be rest assured that this minor setback will not, in anyway, impinge on all ongoing operations.”

Court dismisses Nnamdi Kanu’s N1bn suit against FG

Published

By

A federal high court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against the federal government and Department of State Services (DSS).

In a judgment delivered on Monday, James Omotosho, the presiding judge, held that Kanu failed to provide credible evidence to back the allegation of violation of his fundamental rights by the defendants.

Omotosho said claims that operatives of the DSS denied Kanu access to his lawyers, and that the officials eavesdropped on his conversations with his lawyers, could not be established.

THE SUIT

The suit was marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1633/2023 and filed on December 4, 2023.

Kanu joined the Federal Republic of Nigeria, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), DSS and its director-general as 1st to 4th respondents respectively.

He sought “a declaration that the respondents’ act of forcible seizure and photocopying of confidential legal documents pertaining to facilitating the preparation of his defence, which were brought to him at the respondents’ detention facility by his lawyers, amounted to denial of his rights to be defended by legal practitioners of his own choice”.

He also sought a declaration that the respondents’ act of preventing his counsel from taking notes of details of counsel’s professional discussions/consultations with him at the DSS detention facility was unlawful.

He further sought a declaration that the respondents’ act of eavesdropping on his confidential consultations/conversations with his lawyers amounted to denial of his rights.

Consequently, Kanu prayed the court for an injunction restraining and prohibiting the respondents from their act of forcible seizure and photocopying of confidential legal documents brought to him at the detention facility by his lawyers.

He also sought N1 billion as damages for the mental, emotional, psychological and other damages he suffered as a result of the violation of his rights.

However, the DSS denied all the allegations by the applicant.

The security service said the applicant is allowed access to members of his family and team of lawyers on his visiting days.

DSS averred that Kanu interacts and consults with his lawyers on his visiting days without any interference.

“Applicant’s counsel are allowed to moderate size notes or pads for the visit, but exchange of materials that promotes the IPOB ideals (subject matter of applicant’s criminal trial) were strongly resisted and refused,” the DSS affidavit reads.

The FRN and the AGF, in their counter affidavit, also urged the court to dismiss the suit for being “an abuse of court process”.

Ooni of Ife unveils new hospital, promises free treatment for emergencies

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has unveiled a medical facility, the Equity Health Group, a pioneering healthcare conglomerate dedicated to transforming the landscape of healthcare delivery, with a mission to provide accessible, high-quality medical services globally, fostering wellness and medical excellence within communities.

The facility which will be opened for public use today (Monday) will be launched officially on July 5 and 6, 2024 in Lagos State.

This was announced in a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Monday.

According to the statement, the revered monarch wishes to establish that a premium must be placed on humanity and life in particular, by ensuring no patient is denied quality healthcare due to financial constraints, especially in times of emergencies.

This development is the sequel to the monarch’s involvement and immeasurable investment in Nigeria’s health sector since becoming the Arole Oduduwa, particularly as demonstrated when the COVID-19 pandemic disease broke out, through the formation of a team of professionals and bringing together reputable medical research outfits, laboratories and other institutions to ensure that Nigerians are safe.

The statement noted that while addressing newsmen on the motivation for the healthcare conglomerate, the Ooni said, “The last pandemic drew my attention to a lot of untapped medical potentials of we black people especially here on the throne of Oduduwa, these stuff (Herbs and its likes) are what saved us from experiencing major challenges faced by most developed countries when no one regardless of riches or status could travel to seek medical attention abroad.

“I had to constitute a team of scholars particularly in the medical profession and veterans in the business/practice of the ancient herbal and alternative medicine who brainstormed on exploiting the best in our local herbal medicine, and this led to the discovery of potent solution through which beneficial products with which we combated and defeated the pandemic were discovered.

“I must hail the collaboration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development and frontline medical research institutions in the country which brought us this far.”

He added, “I remember developing an initiative, called Pan African Foundation for Indigenous Medical Research and Development in 2020, during the celebration of African Traditional Medicine Day. All these activities have now snowballed into Equity Health Group; an international hospital and diagnostic centre with a lot of interlinked arms of medical solutions including drug manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and vaccine production among others. The best part of it is that this facility will source its ingredients locally, thereby strengthening the Naira while boosting the country’s productivity.

“Equity Health Group stands at the forefront of healthcare innovation, encompassing a diverse portfolio of subsidiaries. Through these subsidiaries, we endeavour to revolutionize healthcare delivery and promote well-being globally. At Equity Health Group, we believe in patient-centered care, innovation and integrity.

“Our watchword is to dignify human life by attending to all emergencies immediately regardless of the patient’s financial status. We will work to save lives first and not ask for papers or money from a dying patient.”

Speaking on his involvement, the Ooni revealed, “To the glory of God, I co-own the company with a young visionary entrepreneur – Dozy Mmobuosi who has a very clear and similar vision to take the black race out of over-dependence on the Western world for medicine. We combined efforts to make it a world-class medical institution and diagnostic centre.

“I am pleased to inform you that the company has three subsidiaries. The first is the Equity Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre; a comprehensive hospital and diagnostic service that focuses on advanced medical technology and personalized care. Presently, it is situated in Lagos State with plans for expansion to other parts of the country and the United Kingdom.

“The second arm is the Equity Pharmaceuticals; a company that will leverage innovative technology to provide quality pharmaceutical products and services. Last but not least is the Equity Vaccine Laboratories; an arm that focuses on research and development of vaccines for global health security. With this, we aim to pioneer vaccines to tackle pressing global health challenges and ensure a safer future for all.

“In actualising the purpose of this outfit, we shall bring on board our higher institutions of learning particularly the medical arms of reputable universities including the Ojaja University, Eyenkorin, Ilorin, Kwara State which I own. This will cement the ‘town and gown’ relationship, thereby enhancing the productivity of our graduates.”

Ooni Ogunwusi who is the Co-Chairman, National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria concluded that the advancement in health facilities in the country especially with the involvement of the private sector like the Equity Health Group, will provide a convenient spot for Nigerians to abolish the culture of foreign medical tourism.

“Aside from the provision of unequalled medical services for Nigerians in line with best global practice, Equity Health Group is structured to actively participate in global medical research especially in the area of vaccine production/development to safeguard global health. As the giant of Africa, Nigeria should be at the forefront of vital global medical conversations like the development of vaccines against malaria disease upon which we cannot afford to be dependent on the Western world.

“While I am neither a medical doctor nor a pharmacist, I passionately believe that we have what it takes to change the narrative of over-dependence on medical tourism to the developed countries. Beyond the area of research, Africa and indeed Nigeria can be a major powerbroker in the global pharmaceutical and medical industry”, the Ooni said.
