Social media operators harp on responsible practices in the cyberspace

Published

on

In a contributory move to ongoing discussions on cyberspace practices in Nigeria, players in the social media ecosystem have advocated responsible practices and discretion as some of the solutions to maintaining the sanctity of the online interaction environment.

This view was shared by different speakers at the maiden edition of the Bodex Social Media Hangout held in Lagos last Saturday.

The event, which had some of the leading names in the online and offline media, entertainment and marketing communications industries in attendance, was a call to operators in the social media ecosystem to acknowledge the sweeping influence of internet-enabled innovations on our society and consciously manage how they are utilised as channels of communication to protect our national security and social harmony as a nation.

In her welcome address, Ms. Florence Bodunrin, CEO, Bodex Media Group, who hosted the event noted that “we can no longer dismiss the influence of the internet and its creations. We need to recognise them as the greatest agenda-setting tools in the modern world, but we now need to exercise great caution in the way and manner we deploy them as engagement resources”.

This perspective was also reinforced by Gloria Ohagwu, a presenter and producer at the Voice of Nigeria, and Led Voice Merchant at The TalknowCrat Enterprise, while talking on Social Media: weapon of destruction and progression.
She highlighted the paradoxical effects of social media on the modern world, saying that “the internet technology has as much positive as negative impacts on our world, adding that “the sole determinants of the outcomes we get from using the platforms are human conducts and actions”.

“We need to think deeply before pressing the send button every time we engage online” she advised. This opinion mirrors Mr. Ladi Ogunseye, the President of Digital Marketing Practitioners of Nigeria (DMPN)’s thoughts. He warned that “we should always ignore the barrier computer screens create in every online communication because they are imaginary ”

Mr. Ogunseye added that “online is not an entirely different context from offline. We need to treat ourselves with dignity and respect. Don’t say online what you cannot tell anyone face-to-face in an offline context”.

Earlier, the Executive Assistant to Lagos State Governor on New Media and Public Relations, Mr. Olusegun Fafore speaking on “Consequences of Insidious Comments in the Cyberspace” said that “the word ‘insidious’ in the topic is the key word. It is an adjective, qualifying the noun ‘comments’”.

He added that “without the qualifier, which expresses attitude and disposition, the word ‘comments’ in the cyberspace context may not ordinarily be a subject of concern to anyone. But where comments become ‘sinister’, ‘treacherous’, ‘deceptive’, ‘false’, ‘threatening’ and ‘disturbing’, they become destructive to our social composition. Then we need to become measured”.

“With the reach and growing influence of the internet, which is validated by the increase in the number of internet users from 200,000 nineteen years a go to 116m today, we need to treat our diversity as a nation, which cuts-across languages, religion and cultural practices, with greater care”.

We need to exercise high level of prudence and discipline in how we engage online, particularly when the benefit of context is lost to technology-created facelessness” he concluded.

Other notable speakers at the event include Taiwo James, Founder 69 Entertainment, Fatuntele Tunde, Founder Kobz Media and Yeye Lara Fashola-Fanimokun a Maritime Lawyer, who spoke on ‘Advantages and Disadvantages on Social Media in today’s tradition or cultures’.

Yet another leading voice at the hangout is Mrs. Laila Ijeoma, the owner of Laila News Blog, who discussed “what makes up community in blogging”.

Additionally, special appearance by King Wasiu Ayinde Mashal (KI), Former Inspector General of Police Chief Tunji Alapini and other A-list Artistes like Q-Dot, 9ice, Ara (the first female drummer), nollywood actors, and Asiri comedy added colour to the occasion.

‘Ajakaju’ producer, Eniola Ajao makes U-turn, awards ‘best-dressed female’ to two ladies

Eniola Ajao, the movie producer, has apologised over the controversies trailing the ‘best-dressed female’ award presented to Bobrisky, the crossdresser, at her recently-held movie premiere.

‘Ajakaju: Beast of Two Worlds’ premiere was held on Sunday at Circle Mall, Lekki, Lagos.

Femi Adebayo announced the self-acclaimed transgender as the winner of the N1 million attached to the award.

Bobrisky’s victory, however, stirred controversies online with celebrities and fans questioning the parameters used in handing out the award.

There was a heated war of words between actress Dayo Amusa and Omotayo Sanusi, Adebayo’s wife, while Portable, the controversial singer, referred to Bobrisky as a “disgrace to brotherhood”.

But in an Instagram post, Ajao apologised to all the parties involved in the saga.

The filmmaker expressed “reverence for women” while pledging “never to engage in behaviour that diminishes their role in society”.

The movie star explained that the decision to hand Bobrisky the ‘best-dressed female’ award was a “ploy to create publicity” for the movie.

To make amends, Eniola also announced two new winners for the ‘best-dressed female’ category, adding that each will receive N1 million as a “token of my sincere apology and appreciation for their grace and elegance”.

“I address you all today, taking full responsibility and seeking your pardon with my deepest regrets for the distress and turmoil caused by the events surrounding the selection of Best Dressed at the premiere of “AJAKAJU,” the statement reads in part.

“First, I want to extend my sincerest apologies to the Muslim community, especially during this sacred month of Ramadan.

“To the women in our society, I want to express my profound apologies. As a woman myself, I understand the importance of upholding and honoring our gender with dignity and respect. I want to assure you that I hold the utmost reverence for womanhood, and I would never intentionally engage in any behavior that diminishes or disparages the role of women in our society.

“I also extend my heartfelt apologies to My honorable and supportive boss Femi Adebayo @femiadebayosalami and his wife, @iyanaladuke and @dayoamusa for the undue backlash they faced as a result of the announcement made at our event. I deeply regret the insults and disrespect directed towards them, and I take full responsibility for any harm caused.

“To Bobrisky @bobrisky222 I offer my sincere apologies for putting you in a difficult position. The decision to award you was never meant to cause harm or controversy but was rather an attempt to generate publicity for our movie. I am truly sorry for any distress this may have caused you.

“To make amends and correct my mistakes, I have decided to honour two females, Bode Alao and one other beautiful woman as the best-dressed females at the premiere. Each will receive a sum of N1,000,000.”

It, however, remains to be seen if the award and money handed to Bobrisky would be taken from her.

Pelumi Nubi, the Nigerian travel content creator driving from London to Lagos, says she will continue the journey — despite surviving a car accident.

On Tuesday, Nubi revealed that she was involved in a car accident.

She also shared a picture of the now-wrecked car she had used for the trip.

The front part of the car was severely mangled while the windscreen had also been shattered.

She accompanied the post with the caption: “Say a prayer for me”.

In a post via her Instagram page on Wednesday, Nubi said she “miraculously survived” the accident.

She said she will be “taking things easy” for now and continue her trip when she regains her strength.

“God has really shown His mercy. Miraculously, I emerged unharmed from the accident – I survived,” she said.

“A big thank you for all your love, prayers, and good thoughts! It’s crystal clear to me that I have a family here online, rooting for me every step of the way.

“I am taking it easy for now, but I’m definitely going to keep going. The journey is far from over, and with renewed strength and your unwavering support, I will continue to move forward.”

Nubi was making the trip in a purple Peugeot 107. The vehicle was customised with features that enabled space for sleeping and dining.

It, however, remains unknown which country she was in at the time of the accident and what caused the crash.

In November, Nubi announced her intention to embark on a solo trip from London to Lagos.

She commenced the trip on January 30.

Pelumi had initially announced that she would arrive in Lagos on March 23.

Ninja, Twitch’s top gamer, diagnosed with skin cancer

Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins, the biggest gamer on Twitch, a live streaming service, has been diagnosed with melanoma.

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer; it develops from the melanin-producing cells known as melanocytes.

In a post via X, Ninja said Jessica, his wife, scheduled his annual skin check-up, where a mole on his foot was flagged for further examination.

The 32-year-old said the mole was later confirmed to be melanoma, adding that he underwent additional procedures to ensure complete removal.

He also urged his fans to prioritise regular skin cancer screenings.

“Alright I am still in a bit of shock but want to keep you all updated. A few weeks ago I went in to a dermatologist for an annual skin/mole check that Jess proactively scheduled for me,” he wrote.

“There was a mole on the bottom of my foot that they wanted to remove just to be careful. It came back as melanoma, but they are optimistic that we caught it in the early stages.

“I had another dark spot appear near it, so today they biopsied that and removed a larger area around the melanoma with the hopes that under the microscope they will see clear non-melanoma edges and we will know we got it.

“I am grateful to have hope in finding this early, but please take this as a PSA to get skin checkups.”

Ninja, who began streaming in 2011, rose to superstardom with the explosion of Fortnite in late 2017.

His streams, which often feature celebrity guests like Drake and Travis Scott, have drawn record viewership on Twitch.

Ninja’s channel is currently the most followed person on Twitch with over 18 million followers. He has nearly 24 million YouTube followers.
