JAMB suspends eTranzact from selling 2023 UTME e-pins to students over extortion

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the immediate suspension of eTranzact from vending the 2023 UTME e-pins.
The board broke the news in the latest edition of its weekly bulletin released on Monday.
ETranzact is a multi-channel electronic transaction switching and payment processing platform.
The platform has been one of JAMB’s major vendors over the years.
But in the release, JAMB said the suspension of the platform followed the alleged “extortion of candidates” registering for the 2023 UTME.
“Evidence available to the board showed that some of the agents of eTranzact such as Embassy Cafe have been vending the 2023 UTME pins above the prescribed fee,” it reads.
“This suspension is sequel to the flouting of the board’s ground rule that no vendor is allowed to sell above the prescribed fee. It should be recalled that the board had made it abundantly clear that to be listed as a vending outlet, a vendor would not be allowed to sell a dime above the approved fee.
“Furthermore, to ensure that all vendors play by the rules, the board had approved a handsome commission for them per each e-pin vended.
“The board also made it explicitly clear that the vendors would be held responsible for the actions or inactions of their agents especially as they concern about the vending fee of its e-pins.
“In view of the incidence of extortion perpetrated by some of its agents, eTranzact is hereby suspended from
engaging in the vending of the Board’s e-pins as well as other transactions associated with the Board’s processes.”
JAMB also called on candidates who have been exploited to forward their complaints to the board for action.

Whitney Adeniran: Chrisland school, staff to be charged with manslaughter and negligence

The Lagos ministry of justice says a case of involuntary manslaughter and negligence has been established against Chrisland High School Ikeja following the death of Whitney Adeniran.
Whitney, who was a student of the Lagos school, died on February 9 during a sports event at Agege Stadium.
Blessing Adeniran, Whitney’s mother, accused Chrisland of holding back information on the cause of her death.
Consequently, the state ministry of education ordered a temporary closure of the school pending an investigation.
The state later revealed that an autopsy on February 15 showed that the girl died from asphyxia and electrocution.
The school has already tendered a public apology on the matter, but an inquest into it is to begin on April 4.
The Lagos ministry of justice now says a case of involuntary manslaughter has been established against the school.
This, the ministry said, is contained in legal advice issued on March 23 by its department of public prosecution on the matter.
The ministry said those to answer to the charges that are to follow include the school, some staffers, and a vendor.
“On the 23rd of March, 2023, the DPP issued his legal advice and came to the conclusion that a prima facie case of involuntary manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts had been established against the school,” it stated.
“They will therefore be charged with the offences of involuntary manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts contrary to Sections 224 & 251 of the Criminal Law, Ch C17, Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
“Information will be filed in accordance with the legal advice issued by the DPP. Certified true copies of the legal advice are available on the ministry of justice website.”

Mock UTME slips are ready for printing, says JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says candidates who registered for the 2023 mock UTME can now print their notification slips.
In a statement by Fabian Benjamin, its spokesperson, the board announced that the slips would be available for printing from March 23.
JAMB said a total of 176,408 candidates are scheduled to take part in the exercise scheduled for March 30.
“All candidates for the mock-UTME are to visit https://www.jamb.gov.ng., click on 2023 mock-UTME on the menu button to print their slips after inputting their registration number,” the statement reads.
“This directive is only applicable to those candidates, who had indicated interest to take the mock examination.
“The notification slip would contain the candidates’ registration number, venue, date, and time of the examination to enable them to easily locate their centres before the examination.
“Candidates are also enjoined to be at their centres one hour before the examination for biometric verification.”
The board reiterated its zero tolerance for examination malpractice, adding that anyone caught would be punished.
“Candidates are advised against going into the examination halls with prohibited items such as wristwatches, calculators, flash drives, phones, among others,” the board added.
“They are also warned to desist from the application of ‘laale’ to do fancied drawings and paintings on their hands to avoid unnecessary interference with the whorls of their fingers which could impede biometric verification.”
The exam was originally fixed for March 16 but postponed due to the governorship and state house of assembly elections.
