Naira could trade below N1,000/$, says Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. says the naira, Nigeria’s currency, could extend gains to trade below N1,000 to the dollar.

On March 10, the financial institution had said the local currency would appreciate to N1,200 per dollar within the next twelve months.

In an interview with Bloomberg on Friday, Andrew Matheny, an economist at Goldman Sachs, said the greenback could further trade below the projected N1,200.

“This probably can run further; we would see an extension of the move to 1,000 and maybe even sub-1,000,” he said.

Matheny said since Goldman’s February forecast, “six weeks have gone by and they’re continuing to hold the line, so that’s encouraging”.

The firm’s forecast comes amid a sustained rally of the naira at both parallel and official sections of the foreign exchange market.

On April 8, the local currency strengthened to N1,120 per dollar at the black market and N1,230 at the official window.

Ex-beauty queen Tomi Salami to unveil environmental advocacy project in Lagos

Tomi Lydia Salami, the Nigerian ex-beauty queen, is set to unveil an environmental advocacy project in Lagos.

The project, titled ‘Catch Them Young: Environmental Awareness Convention 2024′, is targeted at high school students in Lagos.

The convention will be held at the J.F Ade Ajayi Auditorium of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on May 30.

In a statement on Saturday, the 2012 Miss Tourism Nigeria said the environmental advocacy project “aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on Sanitation, Clean Energy, Climate Action and Environmental Protection”.

The project aimed to advocate for clean energy, climate action and environmental protection through Aurora International Charity Foundation, the ex-beauty queen’s not-for-profit organisation.

Tomi revealed that Lagos was selected for the project because it “maintains a strong position as one of Africa’s top destinations for business, culture, tourism, politics, entertainment, hospitality, sports and more”.

“It is imperative that we engage in activities that creatively and succinctly educate and inspire citizens to become environmentally conscious, thereby fostering a sense of responsibility to our planet,” she said.

“Our focus for the ‘Catch Them Young’ campaign is geared towards the highly impressionable younger generation as we strongly believe that pioneering an environmentally conscious foundation for children early in life will bring about far-reaching success that will spread further and last longer thus establishing children as young Environmental Ambassadors for their various communities.”

She added that the environmental convention will include interactive sessions by expert speakers and stakeholders in the industry. Other participants include environmental activists and celebrities in Nigeria.

Sean Kingston, mum arrested on fraud, theft charges as SWAT raids home

Sean Kingston, the Jamaican-American singer, was arrested in California on Thursday, a few hours after a SWAT team raided his rented South Florida mansion.

The rapper, 34, was apprehended alongside Janice Turner, his 62-year-old mother, on “fraud and theft charges”.

Authorities were seen loading goods into a van outside the mansion surrounded by expensive sports cars.

The arrests may be connected to a lawsuit filed by attorney Dennis Card, alleging fraud over a 232-inch television installation worth $150,000.

Card accused Kingston of defrauding Ver Ver Entertainment in February by failing to make promised payments and commercials. They are asking for $30,000 and attorney fees in a trial by jury.

“He basically has a sales pitch that he goes through to defraud people. He induces them into giving him really expensive things,” Card, who represents the company, said.

“We know that our property is inside this house right here, so as soon as the raid takes place we are going to have a crew of people in there to reassemble it and take it back to its rightful owner.”

In a statement, the Broward county sheriff’s office said Kingston was taken into custody in Fort Irwin, California, and will be booked in jail in San Bernardino.

The sheriff’s office disclosed that it served arrest and search warrants at the property near Fort Lauderdale where the singer resides.

“As a result of the investigation, an adult female, Janice Turner, 2/16/1963, was taken into custody on numerous fraud and theft charges,” the statement reads.

“This investigation is active and ongoing.”

In an earlier Instagram post, Kingston said his lawyers were “handling everything”.

“People love negative energy!” the rapper wrote in the post which was later taken down.

“I am good, and so is my mother! … My lawyers are handling everything as we speak.”

According to records at the Florida department of corrections, Kingston is currently on two years’ probation for trafficking stolen property.

His mother previously served time for bank fraud in 2006.

The rapper, born Kisean Anderson, will be held in California pending extradition to Florida.

Kingston is best known for his 2007 chat-topping song ‘Beautiful Girls’; another hit, ‘Take You There’; and his collaboration with Justin Bieber on the song ‘Eenie Meenie.’
