LandslideThe Ethiopian parliament on Tuesday declared a three-day national mourning for 72 citizens who lost their lives after a massive garbage dump landslide on the outskirts of Addis Ababa.

Head of Addis Ababa City Administration Communication Affairs Office, Dagmawit Moges, said during the three-day national mourning period, from Wednesday to Friday, the country’s flags will fly at half mast.

Moges said the hope of finding missing residents alive is almost unlikely, many more bodies could still be found as the search continues “day and night” at the site where the landslide occurred.

According to him, in an effort to avoid the impact of similar other tragic incidents, has already evacuated 320 inhabitants from the area.

A committee particularly designated to properly respond to the crisis has also  been established by the municipality.

He said that as the death toll increased from the initial 15 to 72, the city administration has organised a public funeral and memorial service for victims of the tragic accident.

Hundreds of emergency personnel comprised the Addis Ababa city Fire and Emergency Prevention and Rescue Agency and Addis Ababa Police Commission are undertaking humanitarian activities at the site where the landslide occurred.

Moges, however, noted that since almost all residents in the area were informal settlers, the number of people missing has not yet been confirmed.

The condition at the 50-year old landfill is said to be a bigger challenge for emergency personnel who are working “day and night” to save the lives of those residents who are missing.

The massive landslide that occurred at 8p.m. on Saturday has buried and damaged several buildings in the area, while many of the residents were inside their houses during the landslide.

The 36 hectare municipal landfill, called “Koshe”, is home to a number of Addis Ababa dwellers who were apparently victim of a number of landslides over the years including the latest one on Saturday.

A passenger plane carrying 62 people has crashed on the outskirts of São Paulo, Brazil, killing all aboard.

The plane was carrying 58 passengers and four crew members at the time of the crash on Friday, according to a statement by Voepass airline.

Footage on social media showed the plane losing balance before spiraling down into a crash.

Brazil’s civil defense said the aircraft crashed into multiple houses.

Authorities said only one home was damaged when the plane crashed, noting that no resident was injured.

More videos showed the aircraft in flames after it came down as thick smoke billowed into the air.

The airline has yet to confirm the cause of the crash.

President Luiz Lula da Silva described the news as “very sad” and extended his solidarity to the families and friends of the victims.

The Brazilian Air Force said it has sent a team of investigators to the site.

Niger Republic cuts ties with Ukraine over support for terrorist groups

The Niger Republic junta says it has severed ties with Ukraine after accusing the European country of supporting “terrorist groups”.

Amadou Abdramane, junta spokesperson, announced on Tuesday that the decision was “with immediate effect” — two days after Mali made a similar move.

The Malian army suffered heavy losses at the hands of jihadists and separatist forces late July, which they partly blamed on Ukraine.

Almost half of the murdered soldiers were Wagner mercenaries.

The row occurred after Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s military spy agency, said the Malian rebels had received the “necessary” information to conduct the attack.

After Mali cut ties with Ukraine, the European country rejected the accusation and said it regretted the “hasty” decision Bamako made.

“The government of the Republic of Niger learned with great amazement and deep indignation, the subversive and unacceptable remarks of Mr. Andriy Yusov,” Abdramane said.

“The government of the Republic of Niger, in total solidarity with the government and people of Mali, decides in complete sovereignty to sever diplomatic relations between the Republic of Niger and Ukraine with immediate effect.”

The spokesperson said Niger would ask the United Nations (UN) security council to debate Ukraine’s “aggression”.

Niger and Mali are run by military governments.

The former French colonies snapped defence agreements with France and the US — countries that played key roles in the fight against insurgencies in both nations — and turned to Russia for help.

Pilot, 4 others killed in Nepal chopper crash

A helicopter crashed in central Nepal on Wednesday, killing all five people aboard including the pilot and four Chinese passengers.

Nepal has a woeful track record on aviation safety and the Himalayan republic has seen a spate of deadly light plane and helicopter crashes over the decades.

The Air Dynasty chopper was heading to Syabrubesi, a starting point for many trekking routes popular with tourists, from the capital Kathmandu.

It lost contact about three minutes after taking off, a press release from the Civil Aviation Authority said, and crashed in Nuwakot district north of the capital.

“All five people aboard including the pilot are dead,” police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki told AFP.

Nuwakot district officer Ram Krishna Adhikari, said five dead bodies have been retrieved from the accident site.

“Police have already reached the site and the rescue operation is going on,” he said.

Nepal’s air industry has boomed in recent years, carrying goods and people between hard-to-reach areas as well as foreign trekkers and climbers.

But it has been plagued by poor safety due to insufficient training and maintenance, issues compounded by mountainous Nepal’s treacherous geography.

The Himalayan republic has some of the world’s most remote and tricky runways, flanked by snow-capped peaks with approaches that pose a challenge even for accomplished pilots.

The European Union has banned all Nepali carriers from its airspace over safety concerns.
