Denmark is now the World most Happiest Country… Wondering what position Nigeria is?

Published

on

So the good thing about this report is that Nigeria amidst the hardship currently befalling the country didn’t feature on the top 10 Least Happy Countries and also in the top 10 most happy country Nigeria still didn’t feature…
According to the World Happiness Report Update 2016, released Wednesday by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations, Denmark, renowned for its bicycle culture, is officially the happiest country in the world. The country bumped Switzerland down a rank from the No. 1 spot by just a few decimals.
This year’s World Happiness Report is written by a group of individual experts who evaluated 156 countries’ well-being and lifestyle by measuring universally valuable constructs, like income, social support, having the freedom to make life choices and healthy life expectancy.

For the first time the report, which launched in 2012, found that one key to a country’s happiness is the equality of happiness. “[The researchers] now argue that the inequality of well-being provides a broader measure of inequality,” the authors wrote. “They find that people are happier living in societies where there is less inequality of happiness.”
Denmark encourages healthy living in a number of ways. As mentioned, bikes make the country go ’round: 50 percent of Copenhageners commute by bike every day, and there are actually more bikes than people. We’ve learned that America’s popular way of getting around by car can actually contribute to weight gain, bad moods and stress. Bicycling does not do any of this.
Denmark expands its healthy and happy principles way beyond its citizens’ daily commutes. In a 2013 blog for The Huffington Post, Senator Bernie Sanders commended Denmark for its lifestyle practices, and conceded that the U.S. could learn a lot from the country. Since the U.S. is valued as the 13th happiest country, Sanders is probably on to something.
“In Denmark, social policy in areas like health care, child care, education and protecting the unemployed are part of a ‘solidarity system’ that makes sure that almost no one falls into economic despair,” Sanders wrote. Denmark’s universal, free and high quality health care is, in part, responsible for its citizens’ overall well-being, Sanders argued.
Sanders also highlighted Denmark’s country-wide four weeks of paid leave for mothers before giving birth. Once the baby arrives, women are given another 14 weeks of paid time off. “Expecting fathers get two paid weeks off, and both parents have the right to 32 more weeks of leave during the first nine years of a child’s life,” Sanders wrote. “The state covers three-quarters of the cost of child care, more for lower-income workers.”
Indeed, these are rights many Americans are currently campaigning for. The U.S. mandates unpaid parental leave, considered “the worst maternity leave laws on earth,” by some.
The good news is that by analyzing many lifestyles, we’re learning how to foster global and national happiness. It’ll take change and time to adapt to different ways of life, but it’s progress.

Vice President Shettima will no longer be representing President Bola Tinubu at the 2024 US-Africa Business Summit in Dallas, Texas.

The Vice President was scheduled to leave Nigeria on Sunday, May 5, 2024, but his aircraft developed a technical fault, forcing him to abort his trip to the United States.

Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications to the Vice President, made this known in a statement on Monday, May 6, 2024.

According to him, due to the development, Shettima will stay back in the country to carry on with other national duties, while the whereabouts of his principal remain unknown to Nigerians.

The statement reads in part, “Vice President Kashim Shettima who was originally scheduled to represent the President was unable to make the trip following a technical fault with his aircraft, forcing him to make a detour on the advice of the Presidential Air Fleet. The Vice President will carry on with other national duties.

As a result, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has now been scheduled to represent President Tinubu at the summit.

According to Nkwocha, the summit, taking place at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, will bring political and business leaders from across Africa, the United States, and other regions together.

“It features high-level dialogues, networking sessions, and plenaries. Among the African heads of state expected are President Joseph Boakai of Liberia, President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi, President Joao Lourenço of Angola, President Mokgweetsi E.K. Masisi of Botswana, President José Maria Neves of Cabo Verde, and Deputy Prime Minister Nthomeng Majara of Lesotho,” he said.

80% of buildings in Lekki have no government approval, says commissioner

Oluyinka Olumide, commissioner for physical planning and urban development in Lagos, says 80 percent of buildings in the Ibeju Lekki-Epe corridor have no government approval.

The Lagos government has been facing backlash for the demolition of buildings and shanties across the state.

Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner for environment in Lagos, has repeatedly said the demolished structures were erected in contravention of the city’s masterplan, were never approved by the relevant agencies, and occluded drainage channels.

In an interview with journalists, Olumide said despite the rigorous procedures involved in securing government approval, property developers and owners are still circumventing due process.

“Just last Thursday and Friday, my team and I were in the Ibeju Lekki and Epe axis and you would agree that anybody passing through that corridor would see a lot of estates marked,” he said.

“We went there, and I can tell you that from what we saw, over 80 percent of them do not have approval.

“The procedure to get approval is first to get the planning information, as to what those areas have been zoned for. In this case, what we have is agricultural land, and people now go to their families to buy agricultural land.

“Of course, those lands would be sold because those families do not know the use such land would be put to.

“The next thing to do is the fence permit. If you missed the earlier information on not knowing the area zoning, at the point of getting the fence permit, you would be able to detect what the area is zoned for. After that, the layout permits a large expanse of land.

“So, you can see all these layers. But people still go ahead to start advertising. Some have even gone to the extent of displaying the sizes they want to sell. Imagine someone in the diaspora who wants to send money without any knowledge.

“Then, no approval is eventually gotten. Even if they pass the assignment and the survey to them, we would not grant the individual permit, because that area is not zoned for that purpose.”

On Sunday, Wahab said owners of recently demolished property in Maryland had been served notices since 2021.

“We are not just doing demolitions. The law allows us to remove encumbrances on the right of way of the drainage channels,” Wahab said on Channels Television.

Lagos state government to demolish 100 shanties at Adeniji Adele, asks occupants to leave

The Lagos government says it will undertake an enforcement action to remove over 100 shanties at the Adeniji Adele under-bridge area of the state.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Sunday, Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos commissioner for environment and water resources, said the decision to remove the shanties follows the expiration of a 48-hour notice given to the occupants to vacate the area.

He said operatives of the kick against indiscipline (KAI) and officials from the monitoring enforcement and compliance (MEC) department of the ministry would be given security backup to carry out the operation.

“This exercise is part of the avowed commitment of the present administration under Mr @jidesanwoolu to reclaim all ungoverned spaces that dot the Lagos landscape,” the statement reads.

“Unsightly shanties which are located in the heart of Lagos Island represent a distorted image of what a smart city like Lagos should be.

“Apart from the unsanitary conditions of residents in the shanties, it also serves as a hiding place for criminals and points for peddling hard drugs and substances which is injurious to the wellbeing of law-abiding residents.

“Therefore, I advise all the occupants of the shanties in their interest, to voluntarily move out with their belongings before the commencement of the enforcement operations on Monday.”
