The Day Comedian Ali Baba Was Almost Beaten Up For Rendering Public Service

Ali Baba

Ace Entertainer Ali Baba, popularly referred to as the King of Comedy in Nigeria once rendered a well meant Public service he almost regretted.

The comedian took to Instagram a few minutes ago to recount memories of the day he was almost mobbed by a set of angry youths in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria.

The education of our minds as a people is a very important tangent in The Whole efforts to have a better country. Met someone today who reminded me of how he and some people had to rescue me from the hands of some angry youths in Warri in 2008.

I had checked into Hotel Excel and wanted to another hotel down the road that our guys were checked into. There was a long queue of vehicles, trying to avoid a very deep and wide pothole. And it had caused the traffic to build up. Anyway, I came down and looked at the bad spot.

It was bad. But thought that it would make a difference if broken blocks were poured into the bad portions, just to let the traffic flow better till the place was repaired. Anyway, since I was there for 4 days, one day was gone, I called my guys in Warri to arrange for 2 trucks of rubble to be poured in.

And went on to the hotel down the road. About 2 hours later, the driver of the tipper and the guys supervising the filling were beaten up and asked to call who sent them. I rushed to the scene and met about 12 youths and all of them asking what gave me the audacity to start work without settling them. I introduced myself and one of them said, “So because you be Ali Baba, make we relocate?”

I then told them what had mad me do it. And added that if they were that bitter about it, I was very sorry. I told the 2 drivers who had been told to kneel by the road to take back the rubbles. That was when the man I ran into today, a known Warri guy, came to resolve it.

He begged me not to take back the rubbles, since they had been bought and said we should forget all the drama. At this time, one of their Councilors had been called to the scene. He apologized and even joined in spreading the rubbles. Long story short, and Needless to mention that the traffic had built up all the way to Warri/Sapele Road. But soon after the rubbles were evenly spread, the traffic flowed seamlessly.

At the point I was about to leave, some Okumagba Layout boys had been informed and were ready to come kpokpo the area. There were some slaps, brushing, kwaking, and some threats, that would have led to some serious gbege, thanks to the arrival of 2 Military patrol!

Yemi Alade slams colleagues who downplay Afrobeats genre

Yemi Alade, the Nigerian singer, says downplaying the role of Afrobeats in the development of music artistes is “hypocrisy”.

Afrobeats has been one of Africa’s biggest exports in the past years. In 2023, Afrobeats enjoyed massive global recognition, with top Nigerian artistes like Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy — among others — gracing the stages of some of the biggest events and occasions worldwide.

But Wizkid recently sparked controversy after he asked the public not to label him an “Afrobeats artiste”.

The ‘Essence’ hitmaker said although he is African, he “makes all sorts of music”.

He said referring to every song as Afrobeats is why Nigerian artistes are only nominated in “African categories” of music awards like the Grammys.

Similarly, Burna Boy, in 2022, said his style of music is called Afrofusion, and not Afrobeats as assumed.

In a post via her Instagram story on Wednesday, Alade said African artistes are free to define their music genre.

The songstress, however, advised her colleagues not to downplay the role of Afrobeats in their development.

“I don’t see anything wrong in informing your listeners of the genre of music an artist makes especially when you feel it doesn’t define your art,” she said.

“Just announce your genre in peace. Downplaying the role Afrobeats has played in every artist’s development is hypocrisy.”

Alade is arguably one of the top female artistes in the country. She gained fame with the release of ‘Johnny’, her 2014 single.

Sola Sobowale, the Nigerian actress, has revisited the rumours surrounding her alleged arrest for drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia.

In the recent episode of the ‘King of Talk’ podcast with Teju Babyface, the 58-year-old film star recalled how several negative reports were published about her in Nigeria after she relocated to the United Kingdom to do menial jobs.

The actress said one of such reports was that she was killed in Saudi Arabia for drug trafficking.

She said lots of people were shocked to see her alive when she decided to return to Nigeria.

“The worst of the rumours I heard about me was when they said Sola Sobowale had been killed in Saudi Arabia. That I carried cocaine,” she said.

“It was written here in Nigeria. That I was arrested in Saudi Arabia. That there, they amputated my leg and my hand. And I said to them that I am a star in Nigeria and that they should kill me.

“So when I now got to Nigeria, at the airport, they said ‘Sola Sobowale is dead’. I said do you believe in abracadabra? I said I am alive. I have never been to Saudi Arabia.

“I do not even know where it is on the map. So many negative things. But to God be the glory. God has compensated me.”
