‘Worst Senate’: Senator Rafiu Ibrahim Exposes Governor El-Rufai
Rafiu Ibrahim, senator representing Kwara south, says Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, is one of the people who got the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the current “mess” it found itself.
Ibrahim, one of the APC senators who joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier in the week, said this in reaction to the comment of el-Rufai that the 8th senate is the worst in the history of the country.
The lawmaker disagreed with el-Rufai, saying facts do not support his position.
“May be we need to educate this aggrieved governor that this senate in three years already has the highest number of bills with relevance to improving the economy, eliminating insecurity and corruption since 1999, even though we still have 10 months to the end of our tenure,” he said in a statement.
“Similarly, we have treated more petitions than the number that all the past senate combined had done. Our interventions on key issues that affect the day to day living of Nigerians have remained unparalleled.”
Ibrahim said el-Rufai is feeling pained by the rejection of the $350 million World Bank loan that the upper legislative chamber refused to give consent to.
He wondered why the governor could attack the senate when he allegedly tried to lobby Senate President Bukola Saraki over the issue.
“El- Rufai is an aggrieved governor. He is pained by the rejection of his request for foreign loans by the Senate committee on foreign and local debt which is headed by a senator from Kaduna state, Shehu Sanni. The Governor has been speaking from both sides of the mouth,” the statement read.
“He had sent several persons to the senate president on this loan. I am aware that when he sent the current minister of finance to Dr. Saraki, the latter made it known that he too was helpless on the issue as there was no personal reason that will make him stand against such a request.
The senate president advised the governor to reach out to the three senators from the state and get them to support the decision as he, the senate president, would find it difficult to overrule the senators, particularly since one of them is the chairman of the concerned committee.
The three Senators from Kaduna state insisted that an approval for the loan would sentence Kaduna State to many years of indebtedness.
“I am aware of the text message that this same wl-Rufai sent to Saraki few weeks ago, thanking him for the useful and supportive discussion the senate president had with the minister of finance on the Kaduna loan issue and commending this same Saraki for the leadership he has provided on a number of issues.
“For him to now be making this kind of nonsensical and reckless statements against the senate president shows that he is a double-faced, reckless and immature.
People should ignore him. He is one of the people who destroyed APC up to the point that it is and President Buhari had better realised that with a supporter like el-Rufai, he does not need an opponent again.”

‘He wanted me to succeed him’ — Aiyedatiwa dedicates victory to Akeredolu
Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ondo state governor-elect, says he wishes Rotimi Akeredolu, his late principal, was alive to witness his victory.
Aiyedatiwa, the incumbent governor of Ondo, secured victory in all 18 LGAs, garnering 366,781 votes to defeat his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 117,845 votes.
Aiyedatiwa took over the leadership of the state after Akeredolu died from protracted prostate cancer in 2023.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television after his victory, Aiyedatiwa said Akeredolu wanted him as his successor.
“How I wish he was present in that banquet hall when I was declared in the company of other brother governors. That would have been really good, but God knows better,” he said.
“It is so sad and painful that he didn’t live to see the manifestation of what he himself spoke about. I do refer to him sometimes as the man who saw tomorrow.
“He knew that I was going to succeed him as governor. He knew because he wanted me to and was ready to give me the full backing.”

Aiyedatiwa takes commanding lead in Ondo guber poll after winning 15 of 18 LGAs
Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, is well ahead of his compatriots in the Ondo governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commenced the announcement of the results at midnight on Saturday.
So far, results from 15 local government areas (LGAs) have been announced, with three outstanding.
Aiyedatiwa has polled 268,144 votes so far, while Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured 79,125 votes and Abbas Mimiko of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has won 2,365.
The APC candidate, who is the incumbent governor, has won in all the 15 LGAs, including the strongholds of his challengers.
Results from Ilaje, Ese-Odo and Odigbo LGAs are still being expected at the collation centre.
The collation exercise was adjourned till 12pm by the INEC returning officer for the election.
Meanwhile, on the INEC result viewing portal, 99 percent of the governorship election results have been uploaded.
The election, which took place on Saturday, was largely peaceful and devoid of violence in most parts of the state.
However, journalists and civil society organisations observed several cases of vote trading.
“This situation has continued unabatedly and heightened in this election. It is worrying that, despite the high presence of security personnel at the polling units, vote trading went on openly unchecked during the voting hours,” the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room said in its preliminary assessment.

DSS operatives arrest man with bags of cash during Ondo guber
Personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) have apprehended a suspected vote buyer in the ongoing Ondo governorship election.
The man was nabbed on election day at ward 4, polling unit 007, outside St Stephen’s Primary School, Akure.
Television footage showed the operatives and passers-by bellowing on the man to open the boot of his Toyota Camry car. Once he did, two ‘Ghana-must-go’ bags were seen sitting pretty.
The bags were not opened before the cameras as a mob encircled.
The DSS operatives then shoved the man into a white bus from where he was spirited away.
Vote-buying has become commonplace in Nigeria’s elections. Civil society organisations continue to bemoan the trend where agents of political parties carry cash to polling units to induce voters to cast their ballots a certain way.
