Presidential Aspirant of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoleye Sowore, has said APC people are very good at propaganda.

He disclosed this while responding to questions on his chances of winning the 2019 Presidential election on Channels TV Politics today.

Sowore claimed that the current administration has failed in areas of security and improving the living condition of the people.

Mr Sowore said the ruling party is relying on propaganda to win the 2019 election.

“The party (APC) is a disaster, their programmes have not been implemented, they came that they want to protect the country in the areas of security but the story, you know as it is unfolding in Benue today, the Fulani herdsmen, you just have more ‘openings’.

“This government is going down, there is no question about it, and they know they are going down.

“They have some kind of false confidence that they could get unto the public because they have impoverished the public that they think if they distribute N5,000 in the next general election, they will be able to convince people and win the election.

“This is not confidence, it is arrogance and it is going to lead to political suicide,” Mr Sowore said.

The aspirant also said he believes Nigeria has become the poverty capital of the world.

“Nigeria just recently became the poverty capital of the world, taking over from India, that happened during the Buhari regime. A lot of killing of the military and civilians are still going on.

“The APC people are very good at propaganda. That is why we call them ‘All Propaganda Congress’.They have been able to lie in three years, they can’t lie (to) themselves now. They want to lie to win the next election.”

“And now they are buying votes, where do they get the money to buy votes in Ekiti? That’s because they have engaged in the same kind of political corruption the PDP engaged in then.”

Mr Sowore said he is hopeful that his party will emerge successful in the 2019 presidential election.

Budget padding: Step down immediately, PDP tells Akpabio

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked Senate President Godswill Akpabio to “immediately step aside” and allow for an independent investigation into the allegation that the 2024 appropriation act was padded by N3 trillion.

At the weekend, Abdul Ningi, senator representing Bauchi central, stirred controversy when he alleged that the 2024 budget was padded by N3 trillion and that the country is operating two budgets concurrently.

On Tuesday, the allegation was debated at the “committee of the whole” of the red chamber, amid a rowdy session.

Subsequently, the senator was suspended for three months.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the PDP said Akpabio is not fit to continue as senate president.

‘WE STAND WITH NINGI’

The PDP condemned Ningi’s suspension, saying there was no detailed investigation of the claims raised by the lawmaker.

“The PDP firmly condemns the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in the Senate without a detailed inquest into the issue of budget padding which he raised,” the statement issued by Debo Ologunagba, PDP spokesperson, reads.

The party said Ningi’s suspension is “apparently a desperate move to suppress investigation, conceal and sweep the facts under the carpet”.

The PDP said the senate should have referred the claim to a standing committee for an open investigation in line with the extant rules of the senate.

“What is the APC senate leadership afraid of and what is it hiding from Nigerians?” the party asked.

“It is even more absurd that instead of recusing himself, the Senate President sat as a judge in the matter; a situation that has the capacity to bring the institution of the Senate to further public disrepute.

“This is especially as the issues at hand heavily border on alleged gross misconduct and criminal betrayal of public trust which are serious offences under our laws.”

The PDP said the lack of a thorough investigation of the claim has smeared the image of the senate.

“Our Party therefore stands with Senator Ningi for his courage in seeking probity and accountability in the polity,” the opposition party said.

Drama as lawmaker’s mic goes off while alleging senior senators got N500m for projects

There was a rowdy session in the senate on Tuesday when Jarigbe Jarigbe, a lawmaker, claimed that some “senior senators” got N500 million in the 2024 budget for constituency projects.

Jarigbe made the claim while contributing to the motion moved by Solomon Adeola, senator representing Ogun west, on the allegation of budget padding.

The Ogun west senator said his privilege was breached because he participated in the budgeting process.

During the weekend, Abdul Ningi, senator representing Bauchi central, stirred a controversy when he alleged that the 2024 budget was padded with the sum of N3 trillion by the senate.

Ningi said a “huge damage” has been done to the entire country through the budget.

The national assembly had passed a budget of N28.7 trillion for the 2024 fiscal year.

President Bola Tinubu had proposed N27.5 trillion, but the lawmakers jerked it up by N1.2 trillion.

THE MICROPHONE INCIDENT

During the debate on the allegation, Jarigbe, senator representing Cross River north, said the matter is a “misunderstanding of figures”.

The Cross River senator said there is no difference between the figures reeled out by Ademola, chair of the senate committee on appropriations, and the figure purported to have been padded.

The lawmaker alleged that all the senators are “culpable”, if they are to dive into the issue of the budget and constituency projects.

“We are going forth and back on these issues — the issue of the budget and individual issues concerning what came to our various constituencies,” Jarigbe said.

“If we want to go into those issues, all of us are culpable. Some senior senators got N500 million each. I’m a ranking senator; I did not get. Did I go to the press? Most of you got.”

While the Cross River senator was speaking, some senators were shouting “point of order”.

Suddenly, the microphone being used by Jarigbe appeared off while the senator was trying to make his point.

After some minutes of a rowdy session, the microphone came on and the senator tried to ask his colleagues to maintain decorum and that he still wanted to talk.

“Let us wash our dirty linen in public,” Jarigbe said during the rowdy session in the senate.

Subsequently, the senate suspended Ningi for three months.
