Black Widow Star, Scarlett Johansson Sues Almighty Disney Over Breach Of Contract

Hollywood actress, Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney for breach of contract over her superhero film Black Widow. The American actress is claiming that the studio’s decision to launch her first, and last, Marvel standalone film on Disney+ as well as cinemas is a breach of contract.

“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel,” the suit, which was filed yesterday, 29 July, read.

Black Widow': Scarlett Johansson sues Disney for breach of contract

Johansson claims that her salary was based on the box office performance of the film, which opened strong with $80m in the US but suffered the steepest second week decline of any entry within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, dropping 67%. Exhibitors later criticised Disney, blaming the hybrid release for the drop.

The National Association of Theatre Owners, which represents about 30,000 screens in the US, sent out a press release saying that the performance “demonstrates that an exclusive theatrical release means more revenue for all stakeholders in every cycle of the movie’s life”.

Disney announced in March that the $200m-budgeted film would go to cinemas while also being available to rent on Disney+ for $30. The studio claimed that it made $60m via rentals in its opening weekend. Its global haul currently stands at $319m, one of the lowest-performing Marvel films to date.

The complaint claims that Johansson’s lawyers reached out in 2019 to Disney with concerns about the film being given a multi-platform release. They later tried to renegotiate her contract after the release strategy was changed.

“This will surely not be the last case where Hollywood talent stands up to Disney and makes it clear that, whatever the company may pretend, it has a legal obligation to honor its contracts,” said John Berlinski, an attorney at Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP who represents Johansson, in a statement.

Cynthia Morgan has revealed why she will never reach out to Burna Boy amid the controversy surrounding his rumoured past relationship with Uju Stella.

In a recent post on her Instagram story, Morgan claimed people advised her to contact Burna Boy regarding Stella’s interview.

In the interview, Stella alleged that she and Burna Boy dated for three years and she got pregnant for him.

In the post, Morgan said she can’t reach out to Burna Boy because he is still upset that she didn’t believe him when Stella made the accusations in 2016.

The songstress also took a shot at men, arguing that they tend to lie and get angry when others don’t believe them.

“For those sending me messages to reach out to Burna Boy, I won’t. If it was me I would reach out but he is probably still mad that I didn’t believe he didn’t impregnate Uju Stella in 2016,” she wrote.

“That’s what most men do. They lie and get mad when you don’t believe them. Something he finally admitted to online 8 years later. You all leave me alone. All the best Damini.”

Morgan and Burna Boy have collaborated on music, with their 2016 song ‘Acting Bad’ a notable example.

There were also rumours of a romantic relationship between the two singers in 2015, although the pair did not confirm it.

Cubana Chief Priest, the Nigerian socialite, has promised to secure the release of Speed Darlington, the rapper.

The rapper was arrested on November 27 while performing at a show in Owerri, Imo state. He was accused of cyberstalking Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning artiste.

In a post via his Instastory on Sunday, Cubana shared a photo of Darlington. In the accompanying caption, the socialite said: “Tomorrow we coming for you Akpi Nwamama.

“Monday is almost here. Make we now show power,” he added.

The post comes amid the feud between Cubana and Burna Boy over an undisclosed matter.

Over the weekend, the duo engaged in a heated war of words on social media.

The controversy started when Burna took to Instagram to call out the socialite, describing him as a “low-budget Rick Ross”.

“No forget say u be Azaman o. And dem don gbe your plug wey him name na Omo Igbo for ATL. And na u be next. #OwerriRickyrozay,” he wrote in Pidgin English.

Responding via a series of posts, Cubana said Burna Boy was dissing him out of jealousy over his success.

He also claimed the singer won a Grammy award because of his relationship with the embattled US rapper Diddy.

“It’s so clear because how is it even possible that someone who brags to be so rich go dey live in so much pain? Wetin dey pain you? Shebi na you be African princess,” he wrote.

In another post, the socialite recounted how he paid Burna N1 million to perform as a backup artiste for his birthday celebration in 2018.

Darlington, on the other hand, has remained in detention despite a court order granting him bail in December.

His lawyers Deji Adeyanju and Stan Alieke have described his continued detention as “unjustifiable”.

In a statement on his X page on Monday, Adeyanju disclosed that the police have been directed to comply with the court’s order to release the rapper.

“The Federal High Court has directed the Nigerian Police to comply with the order to release Speed Darlington immediately pending the hearing of the substantive matter,” he said.

“The court further directs Abubakar Marshal, Esq. to stand as surety to Akpi. Alternatively, he should be arraigned immediately.”
