Practitioners Should Stop Using Social Media To Harm Mental Health Of Nigerians – Ogundero, CEO Labby Media

Published

on

Omolabake Ogundero, the Founder/CEO of Labby Media, a Public Relations/digital marketing and social media management company, in this interview with IKECHI NZEAKO, speaks about her company, the challenges in the media industry and how to reduce the incidence of fake news. Excerpts:

What services does the company provide?

We run a public relations agency; we are into media tours, media buying and publications.

We are also into digital marketing and social media management. We do both online and offline.

What motivated you to go into this line of business?

I studied mass communication in school and it is an area I have passion for; I am an ex-beauty queen and I worked with NTA during my youth service.

I believe there are problems I can solve in the industry because I am a problem solver.

How long have you been in the business?

The business was registered five years ago.

How has it been for you?

It is a competitive market and you need to bring your A game and experience to succeed.

You need to do more than one thing to make it in the industry. People come into the industry with new ideas every day and you need to be innovative and proactive to stay ahead of competition.

How would you describe the Nigerian media space?

There is a need to for accountability among reporters and practitioners; news should be verified before it is published.

There is a need to reduce the incidence of fake news; people should not sit in their houses and offices and publish false stories that harm the mental state of others.

I see some news online and I know that that was not the way it happened. People should not deliberately harm the mental health of others because they want to drive traffic to their site.

There is need to make sure that only factual and credible news is allowed to go out.

There is practically no organization to flag fake news and there is no penalty despite the fact that the news content was false and harmed the mental health of other people.

We need an association that will stop the publication of fake news. People should be made to account for their actions in the industry. People should not be allowed to damage the mental health of others in the guise of growing the numbers and profit.

There is a need to educate reporters and practitioners on the dangers that fake and false news can do to society and the mental health of individuals. Everybody should endeavour to carry news that is factual and verified. They should realize that their actions have an impact on others.

How have you used social media to grow your business?

I am a social media influencer and I have over 50,000 followers on instagram and over 50,000 followers on twitter and a huge number of likes on facebook.

I advertise myself and use social media to grow my business.

I get advertisements from big brands like Coca-Cola and others. You need to find your niche and what works for you on social media.

One needs to be careful and wise on social media because it can make or mar one’s business or person. I have grown my social media organically and my followers know my story and they can relate to it.

They know where I am coming from and where I am headed.

What qualities should one possess to succeed in the industry?

You need to have passion to succeed in the industry; everyday there are new challenges and one should be prepared to overcome and you have to be passionate about what you do to stay in the business.

You need to be a problem solver to be in the business and should learn to be Jack-of-all-trades and you need to be consistent and persistent.

What is you projection for the company in the next five years?

We want to be a big company operating in different countries; Labby Media will have a floor for online business, another for online, another for public relations, another one into production.

Actors and actresses will come to our studios to record and the same for musical acts. We want to become a complete media production house.

What is your advice to young people?

My advice to them is that they should learn to be problem solvers; so many people want to work and they do not have any skill.

They should learn a skill and become problem solvers and they will be relevant to society.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) says a warehouse selling harmful products in Ekiti state was raided and sealed on Wednesday.

In a post on X, FCCPC said the raid was carried out after receiving intelligence reports that there were unsafe and expired products in the warehouse located in Ado-Ekiti.

After confirming the reports, FCCPC said the place was sealed.

“Following intelligence reports, our operatives raided a warehouse suspected of selling harmful products, including vegetable oils, cereals and other fast-moving consumer goods,” the commission said.

“During the raid, the FCCPC found evidence of expired goods still on the shelves, deceptive labels on products, fake barcodes, and repackaged, potentially unsafe products.

“The warehouse is now sealed, and the owners along with a supplier are being investigated. Appropriate enforcement actions will follow.”

The commission said it would remain vigilant in protecting consumers and ensuring a fair marketplace in Nigeria.

On April 18, FCCPC raided two 4U Signature supermarkets in the Wuse area of Abuja.

The supermarkets were accused of overcharging customers by implementing prices different from those listed on the shelf tags.

Four days after the supermarket was sealed, FCCPC summoned the owners of Royal Choice, a Chinese supermarket in Abuja, for allegedly refusing to sell to Nigerians.

In a statement, Gbenga Omotoso, the commissioner for information and strategy in Lagos, said Sanwo-Olu commiserated with the family of the late deputy chief of staff.

The Lagos governor said he had lost a “brother and a servant of the people”.

“With deep sorrow, the Lagos State Government announces the passing of the deputy chief of staff (DCoS) to Mr Governor, Mr Gboyega Soyannwo,” the statement reads.

“Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on behalf of the government and people of Lagos, sends his condolences to the Soyannwo family.“

Faulty aircraft: Tinubu should travel by road or use commercial flight, says rep

Ali Isa, a member of the house of representatives, says President Bola Tinubu should travel by road or use commercial flights for official engagements.

Isa, the minority whip and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing the Balanga/Billiri federal constituency of Gombe, spoke on the floor of the green chamber on Wednesday.

Isa was contributing to a motion sponsored by Satomi Ahmed, chairman of the house committee on national security and intelligence, on the need to probe the status of the presidential fleet.

Recently, Tinubu reportedly used a chartered aircraft from the Netherlands to Saudi Arabia after the presidential jet developed a fault.

Early this month, Vice-President Kashim Shettima also cancelled his trip to the United States due to a fault developed by the presidential jet.

Shettima was to represent Tinubu at the 2024 US-Africa business summit.

‘TINUBU SHOULD TRAVEL BY ROAD’

Isa said the president and the vice-president can travel by road or fly commercial airlines when they are going on official engagements.

“Mr Speaker, since an issue has been raised, I would advise that the president should suspend using the presidential aircraft; if there is a need he can use either commercial or chartered aircraft,” the lawmaker said.

“And another option that will also help Nigerians is if the president can travel by road. Nigerians will have hope that our roads will be repaired.”

Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker who presided over the plenary, said the president should not travel by road.

“Are you saying, Mr president, the number one leader should travel around by road?” Kalu asked.

But Kingsley Chinda, the minority leader, corroborated Isa’s position that the president can use commercial aircraft.

“I have not seen anything wrong with a public office holder using public aircraft. The prime minister of the UK uses British Airways. It is commercial,” Chinda said.

“We should be thinking of how to resuscitate the Nigerian Airway.

“British Airways is not a British Air Force; it is a British private company. If we have planes in the presidential fleet, they should be maintained, and the president and vice president can use them.

“If for any reason we have failed to maintain them, it is not for it to be discussed on the floor of the house.”

However, Sada Soli, a member from Katsina countered Chinda, saying that the UK prime minister uses a special British Airways plane.
