‘We don’t know her’ — INEC reacts to viral video of woman collecting N1k to give PVCs

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is currently investigating alleged extortion in connection with the distribution of permanent voter cards (PVCs) in Enugu east LGA of Enugu state.

A now-viral video shows a woman charging N1,000 each from registrants who came to collect their PVCs.

She said in the video that the N1,000 was to cover her transport fare and stress she went through to get the cards to a primary school in a neighbourhood in the LGA.

Speaking with NAN on Monday, Rex Achumie, INEC’s head of department of voter education and publicity in Enugu, said the woman in the video is not a staff or a hoc staff of INEC.

He added that none of the people in the video are INEC employees.

“INEC wants to unravel how the cards got into the hands of the unscrupulous woman in the first place,” he said.

“We are looking at getting the electoral officer in charge of the area to liaise with his staff to know who actually gave the woman the cards.”

Achumie assured residents that INEC would get a clearer picture of the whole episode by Tuesday, as well as “where and whom the woman in question is working for”.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has banned workers from sleeping overnight in construction sites.

Gbolahan Oki, general manager of LASBCA, said the directive is to safeguard the building construction industry.

In a statement on Friday, Olaoye Olusegun, LASBCA spokesperson, said agency officials will start inspecting construction sites across the state at night.

The general manager was quoted as saying construction time in the state is from 7am to 7pm between Monday and Saturday.

He said property developers who engage workers for construction activities outside the stipulated time will have their buildings sealed.

He urged property owners and developers to always employ professionals like architects and civil engineers to handle construction activities.

He warned that henceforth, building sites without professionals will be sealed and removed.

The general manager said all buildings under construction in the last seven months must be re-certified by the agency to ascertain their structural stability.

He appealed to property owners who do not have valid planning permits to regularise them.

On Thursday, four construction workers died inside a two-storey building that collapsed at Arowojobe estate, Maryland, Lagos.

The building was said to have collapsed around 3am on Thursday.

The Lagos State Government has suspended plans for the commencement of its e-call-up system on the Lekki-Epe corridor until further notice.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement on Friday, said the decision is coming after further consideration of stakeholders’ request to extend the timeliness in order to give adequate room for full compliance.

“As a result of this, the Lagos State Government has postponed the commencement of the E-Call Up system on the Lekki-Epe corridor,” Osiyemi said.

He, therefore, urged all stakeholders to seize the opportunity to ramp up full preparation in readiness for the successful take-off of the technology-driven solution of truck movement on the Lekki-Epe corridor.

Recall that the state government had planned to commence the e-call system operation on the Lekki-Epe axis to tackle the chaotic traffic gridlock being caused by truckers.

According to the state government, the e-call up system is an innovative digital platform designed to manage and coordinate the movement of trucks within the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone corridor.

It is hoped that the system will help to prevent traffic congestion and improve the efficiency of logistics operations in the area.

The house of representatives committee on financial crimes has asked Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to appear before it on or before July 30 over budgetary allocation issues.

Obinna Onwusibe, chair of the committee, issued the notice after an oversight function at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.

Onwusibe expressed displeasure over Olukoyede’s absence despite formal notification of the oversight.

NAN also reports that the committee members were denied access to the commission’s complex.

An official of the commission had informed the lawmakers that the EFCC chair was summoned to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) but no further details were provided.

Reacting, the committee chairman said: “In performing our constitutional functions, we had written to the EFCC for this oversight visit.

“The latest letter to EFCC was last week and we all agreed that the oversight is going to be today.

“The purpose was to review EFCC’s budget performance as appropriated by the National Assembly and to assess other matters, including their challenges.

“To our surprise, we found only subordinate staff present, not the chairman or the zonal commanders we requested.

“The committee decided to suspend the oversight and has resolved to summon the EFCC Chairman and his team to appear before us by next Tuesday. He will receive an official letter inviting him to face the committee.

“The integrity and functions of the 10th National Assembly are paramount to us. We have repeatedly requested information and documents from the commission without adequate response, a matter I intended to address today.

“We expect EFCC to comply and appear before us on Tuesday for further discussions.”
