A video of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) and one of the students of the University has surfaced online and by extension generated several reactions.

In the video making the rounds online, the VC of Uniport insists on dismissing a female student of the school over her indecent dressing.

According to the reports making the rounds online, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt was seen in the early hours of today, July 4th 2023 addressing the student about her choice of dress.

Upon sighting the student while walking around the school with the school officials, the curious VC of Uniport questioned the female student if she is comfortable in her indecent outfit adding that she looks nak*d in it.

Responding, the student defended herself as she asserts that she is not naked and felt comfortable in the outfit.

The response however hits the wrong nerve of the VC of Uniport who asked for the officials to collect her details including her matric number as he is going to dismiss her from the school.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that the results of the 2024 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) cannot be printed on paper.

The board clarified in a statement on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, after printed result slips started surfacing on social media platforms following the release of the results.

The board’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin stressed that the 2024 UTME results are not available in any paper format.

He also said the results cannot be found on the JAMB’s website, adding that the only way to check the 2024 UTME result is to send UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to be wary of candidates and individuals parading printed slips of their results on social media.

“The board, once again, wishes to state clearly that the only way to check the 2024 UTME result is to send UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019, using the same phone used by the candidate in registering for the UTME. Ensure that the SIM is not on any bundle, Benjamin said.

“This is different from what obtained last year, hence, the results, at the moment, are not and cannot be found on the board’s website.

“Candidates are urged to follow the method specified above to obtain their results. They need not visit any cybercafe or patronise any third-party entity to check their result.

“The public is also advised to be wary of any candidate parading printed result slip as currently, the result is not on any paper format as being circulated on social media by some individuals.

Recall that JAMB released the 2024 UTME results on Monday, April 29, 2024.

According to JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, “Out of the 1,842,464 released results, a paltry 0.4% scored above 300 while 24% scored 50% (200/400) and above.”

He added that 76% of the candidates got below 200.

Oloyede also said JAMB won’t announce the name of the candidate with the highest score for the 2024 UTME.

He explained that the board made the decision ‘to avoid a repeat of the ‘Mmesoma saga.’

Ekiti students protest, demand justice for corps member killed by police

The Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU), on Tuesday, protested after a corps member from Ekiti was allegedly gunned down by a police officer in Ogbomoso, Oyo.

Last week, students of Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology (LAUTECH) called out a police officer for allegedly firing shots at some of their colleagues who were celebrating their graduation.

Damilola Iyanda, the deceased corps member serving in Ibadan, was said to have attended the convocation party of Oluwafemi Iyanda, his brother, when the incident happened.

Oluwafemi said his brother was confirmed dead at the LAUTECH teaching hospital.

“We were at a lounge in the Under-G area for a convocation party around 2am when we heard that some people were fighting outside,” Iyanda was quoted as saying.

“When we discovered that the place was getting rowdy, we stepped out only to see policemen dispersing the crowd and shooting directly at the people.

“I sustained bullet wounds, but my brother, who came for my convocation, was shot in the head. He was confirmed dead at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital and was taken to the mortuary.”

Benjamin Adekunle, FESSU national president, called for an investigation into the killing of the corps member with a view to bringing the perpetrator to justice.

Adekunle led FESSU members to the Ekiti state house of assembly complex in Ado Ekiti.

Members of the union carried placards and sang solidarity songs in a peaceful protest to demand justice over the killing of the corps member.

Adekunle said the protest was to call the attention of Adeoye Aribasoye, Ekiti state assembly speaker, to ensure the family of the deceased is compensated.

“We demand a swift investigation into this matter and the culprit should be brought to book. We demand for compensation for the family of the deceased,” he said.

“We also demand comprehensive medical treatment for his brother who sustained a gunshot injury. He is at home and his health is deteriorating.

“We demand an end to police brutality in Nigeria. Police should be our friend, save us and not kill us.

“We have come to the House of Assembly today to speak with the Speaker to liaise with his counterpart in Oyo State for swift justice for Iyanda Damilola and Iyanda Oluwafemi.

“They are from Ekiti State and raised and brought up in Ogotun Ekiti.”

Reacting to the protest, Aribasoye condemned the “unprofessionalism of the police officer who allegedly murdered the corps member”, describing it as “senseless”.

“We express our condolences to the family and we condemn the killing and unprofessionalism of the police officer who murdered one of us, a youth from Ekiti State who is also serving his fatherland in cold blood,” he said.

“We condemn it and the House will be sitting. We will have a position during our plenary. Our resolutions will be passed and I know the House will condemn it. It is so unfortunate his life was cut short.”
