Ugandan female MPs seek beauty salon for parliament
Female members of the Ugandan parliament have asked for an in-house beauty salon for legislators.
The call was led by Beatrice Anywar, minister of state for environment, as members of parliament paid tribute to John Bosco Kagoro, a lawmaker who died while serving as principal clerk assistant.
Recently, the new parliament which is under construction, got its own gym. However, female MPs said vigorous exercises left their hair disorganised.
“In our new building, for the sake of ladies, probably we could also have a salon established; because you look at us as we are because we take time to prepare ourselves,”Anywar said.
“Myself, my hair and my nails are part of a woman… if we had it (salon), the ladies would come earlier, spend more time in the gym, knowing that they will rush and clean up and then come to the House.”
The minister said she was the brain behind the gym construction which will boost health, and said a salon would not be out of place for female legislators.
Responding, Anita Among, speaker of parliament, said all requests would be taken care of.
“We can have a salon; we can have anything. In the new building, you will have everything, just be rest assured. Even when you want to rest, you will always have a resting place,” Among said.
The parliament operates on a budget of 900 billion Ugandan shillings (about $237m), providing numerous perks to legislators including allowances for travel, vehicles, fuel, and now potentially salon services.
In February, a social media campaign with the hashtag #UgandaParliamentExhibition highlighted allegations of extravagance against the house.

Task force official wrestles steering wheel with driver in Edo
A video showing an official of the Edo state Public Response Safety Team (PRST) wrestling with a bus driver to take over the steering wheel has surfaced on social media.
In the video, the PRST official is seen violently struggling to take over the steering wheel of a moving vehicle from a bus driver, as passengers were heard pleading with them to bring the vehicle to a stop.
However, in a statement on Thursday, Kelly Okungbowa, the coordinator of PRST, said the official involved in the incident has been sacked.
Okungbowa, who apologised for the conduct of the official, said he was relieved of his duty to serve as a deterrent to others.
“First of all, I want to apologise to the general public for the conduct of our officer in that viral video. There is no perfect society, and the person that erred in that video has been sacked to serve as a deterrent to every member of the commission,” the statement reads.
“I wish to tell the drivers that we are not their enemies, but their friends. Ours is to make sure that we do what is right by ensuring that there is order in Edo state, most especially in Benin City.
The PRST coordinator condemned the driver for taking the official to an unknown destination, causing him to resort to “self-help” during the incident.

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, has denied the recent rumour that he has been arrested in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
On Tuesday, some social media users claimed that Obi was purportedly arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services in Abuja.
In a statement published on his X handle on Wednesday, Obi condemned the “recurrently fake news” about his purported arrest by security operatives.
The former Anambra governor said he is currently at his residence in Onitsha, adding the motive of the fake news merchants cannot be positive.
“I have been made aware of a circulating fake news about my alleged arrest. Let me state unequivocally that these claims are entirely false,” Obi said.
