Putting tribal marks on a child without consent is evil, says Toke Makinwa

Published

Media personality Toke Makinwa has strongly criticised the traditional practice of using tribal marks as a means of identification, calling it a form of cruelty inflicted upon children without their consent.

In a post on her X account on June 16, 2024, Makinwa recalled her recent encounter with an influencer who had tribal marks, which prompted her to think about the age-old practice.

She wrote, “Today I saw a beautiful beauty influencer with tribal marks and it made me think about the cruelty that culture brought upon us. Marking a child without his/her consent as a means of identification is Evil, I know our parents didn’t know any better but damnnnn!!!!”

In a series of posts that followed, she emphasised that while she appreciates the beauty of individuals with tribal marks, her issue lies in the lack of consent involved in marking children for identification purposes.

“Thank God it’s abolished now. My grandma had tribal marks too. Some on her face and her arms, I wonder what life was like when she was younger walking around with it, though I’m sure a lot of people around her had the same but thank God it’s cancelled now,” she said in another post.

After receiving backlash from some X users, Makinwa re-affirmed in another post, that her disapproval was with the lack of consent involved and not the beauty of the marks.

“It’s not the beauty or lack of but the lack of consent. But yeah, I’ve seen a couple of beautiful people with tribal marks,” the media personality explained.

When an X user slammed Makinwa and compared tribal marks to tattoos, she retorted saying, “Tattoos are a choice, marking a child without their consent is not the same. You rest, weirdo.”

Lady with male, female sex organs opens up on condition

A Nigerian lady identified as Queen has shared her experiences living with both male and female reproductive organs.

In a recent episode of Doyin’s Corner, Queen revealed she is a hermaphrodite; meaning she has both male and female sexual organs and they are functional at the same time.

The Lagos-based lady said she figured out her condition at the age of 15. She also spoke about the challenges she has faced.

Queen said she identifies as a male because she feels men always have bad intentions toward her.

“I date women now because I do not feel anything for men but my feeling is always high with women,” she said.

“…I have not carried any pregnancy but I have impregnated two women. Women love me. They give me the love I deserve more than men.”

Queen clarified: “I am not a lesbian but I identify as a man because I have children, I impregnate women. My two kids call me daddy and mummy interchangeably”.

“I don’t feel bad about identifying as a man because that is what makes me happy. I feel happier with women than I’m with men.

“Then I get scared of men because I don’t know their intentions for me and I also do not have urges for them. So I have decided to identify as many and have relationships with women.”

She also shared how social media has helped her come to terms with her intersex identity, overcoming suicidal thoughts and shame.

“Ever since I joined social media, I feel excited. I do not feel bad anymore because I have been advised to face the reality,” she added.

“But when I was not on social media, I felt bad and I was also suicidal because I thought I was a different human.”

Jailed producer Harvey Weinstein hospitalised for heart surgery

Harvey Weinstein, the jailed Hollywood producer, has undergone emergency heart surgery after he was rushed from prison to a hospital in New York.

The 72-year-old, who is serving a rape sentence at Rikers Island prison, was taken to Bellevue Hospital on Monday.

Weinstein underwent pericardiocentesis surgery — a procedure to remove fluid from around the heart and lungs.

Craig Rothfeld, the former filmmaker’s representative, disclosed he is “not in critical condition” but recovering in the intensive care unit.

Rothfeld added that he “is in pain from the procedure and still dealing with several other serious health issues which need to be addressed”.

His lawyers revealed they asked that prison officials immediately move him to Bellevue “based on his complaints to us regarding chest pains”.

Weinstein has battled health issues and has been admitted to hospital multiple times in recent years.

Weinstein remains in custody in New York serving a prison 23-year sentence following a sexual assault conviction in Los Angeles in 2020.

The former filmmaker has been accused by more than 90 women of sexual misconduct. He has, however, denied wrongdoings.

In February 2023, Weinstein was sentenced to 16 more years in prison after he was convicted of rape and sexual assault.

In 2020, he was stripped of his honorary CBE, which was awarded for his contribution to the British film industry.

Davido, Lojay, and Tyla are the African artistes that made the 2024 Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Honour Roll.

The Billboard Honour Roll celebrates chart-topping records across R&B, rap and hip hop from August 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024.

The recognition comes as part of Billboard’s celebration of its R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players, spotlighting those who have propelled the genre to new heights.

Davido and Lojay, the Nigerian singers, made the list courtesy of their contribution to Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational‘.

The song, which was released in October 2023, reached No. 1 on the ‘Adult R&B AirPlay’ chart.

Billboard also honoured Usher, Tyla, Victoria Monet, LuckyDaye, and the late Luther Vandross, as artistes shaping the future of R&B.

Tyla received the ‘Global Impact Award’ for her hit song ‘Water’. The song took over the Billboard US ‘Afrobeats Songs’ chart, staying at No. 1 for 44 weeks.

‘Water’ also reached No. 7 on the ‘Hot 100’, No. 6 on ‘Pop AirPlay’, and topped the ‘Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop and Rhythmic Airplay’ charts.

“The 22-year-old released her self-titled debut album, which opened at No. 2 on the ‘Top R&B Albums’ chart,” Billboard wrote.

“The album’s “Truth or Dare,” “Art” and the Tems-assisted “No. 1” generated attention, while “Jump,” with Gunna and Skillibeng, is now in the top 15 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.”

Other artistes on the list include Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Michael Jackson.
