Mixed reactions trail BRT fare hike.
Two weeks ago, LAMATA announced an increase in the prices of BRT fares. Some people exclaimed that it was just an obscene move to test Lagosians. Through out the state, the 20-50% fare increase has been met with mixed reactions.
Customers of the BRT franchise have different opinions concerning this. Fares ranging from 70-75 naira initially now cost 100 naira. Likewise, fares that initially cost 120 naira now cost 200 naira.
When a passenger expressed his view, he said ” you see, it is a good development,if you look at what happened to the first set of BRTs. They need to increase the price for maintenance and things are very expensive now. The tires that we are selling for #40,000 is now #80,000 to #100,000.”
A friend asked me for directions and was meant to take one of the buses to Agege. I confidently said it was #70 only to get a text a back that it was #100. Whilst a number of people seem indifferent, many others just wish they could revert to the old prices.
