Zambia’s Biggest Market Razed by Fire

Fire gutted part of Zambia’s biggest market in the nation’s capital on Tuesday in what the government suspected was an act of arson as tensions rise following the arrest of an opposition leader.

United Party for National Development leader Hakainde Hichilema was arrested in April and charged with treason for impeding president Edgar Lungu’s motorcade.

The arrest of the opposition leader has stoked political tensions in what is regarded as one of Africa’s more stable and functional democracies following a bruising election last year.

The blaze started at dawn and destroyed property worth millions of kwacha and the entire southern part of Lusaka’s City Market, one of the country’s modern markets.

No-one was killed or injured in the fire.

“Their days are numbered because the police are on their heels and they will soon be arrested,” vice-president Inonge Wina said, referring to the suspected arsonists after touring the market.

Police chief Kakoma Kanganja said in a statement that some people were planning to vandalise vital installations including bridges and power stations.

The police have since offered 300,000 Zambian kwacha (32,894 dollars) for information leading to the arrest of people involved in such acts.

Police spokeswoman Esther Mwaata-Katongo said on Tuesday another fire gutted a charcoal market on Tuesday.

“We have instituted investigation in both cases and at the moment we are not ruling out any possibilities,” Mwaata-Katongo said.

Burna Boy, the Afrofusion singer, and Cubana Chief Priest, the Nigerian socialite, have engaged in a heated war of words on social media.

The drama started on Saturday when Burna took to Instagram to diss the socialite while describing him as a low-budget Rick Ross.

“No forget say u be Azaman o. And dem don gbe your plug wey him name na Omo Igbo for ATL. And na u be next. #OwerriRickyrozay,” he wrote in Pidgin English.

Responding via a series of posts, Cubana Chief Priest said Burna Boy was dissing him out of jealousy over his success.

He also claimed the singer winning a Grammy is linked to having a relationship with the embattled rapper Diddy.

“It’s so clear because how is it even possible that someone who brags to be so rich go dey live in so much pain? Wetin dey pain you? Shebi na you be African princess,” he wrote.

“Only you rush bend down collect Grammy only you still dey cry. Oil full your Grammy we know how painful it was that’s why you want everybody to feel the pain with you. You really suffer I understand you.”

In another post, the socialite recounted how he paid Burna N1 million to perform as a backup artiste for his birthday celebration in 2018.

He went further to describe Burna Boy as “beggi beggi”, meaning a beggar in local parlance.

Cubana claimed that he had been making money long before Burna Boy’s rise to fame, urging him to remain humble.

“Owerri Rick Ross. What a blessing! See where Dem dey rate me put. Me & Rosay #CpNosmall 2018. Na 1m Naira I pay you to perform as backup artiste for my birthday,” he wrote in pidgin English.

“I get pictures & videos where you dey perform for me. I go lie for you. We don dey chop this money before you meet us for queue be humble. Small boy.”

Award-winning Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has melted hearts online with a touching video of him warmly greeting Burna Boy’s mother, Bose Ogulu, at billionaire Tony Elumelu’s All-White Christmas party.

In a video circulating online, the 2025 Grammy nominee was captured exchanging pleasantries with Burna Boy’s mother at Tony Elumelu’s All-White Christmas party.

In the viral clip, Bose Ogulu was seen sitting with her daughter as Davido approached her to greet her.

The sweet gesture has been widely praised by fans, who commended the singer for his respect and maturity.

An X user, Iwunze (who identifies as #IwunzeJC), wrote, “Normally, Davido has no problem. He is a free-spirited man. He loves and respects mothers a lot, regardless. And that is one of the reasons I like him.”

Another user, Ada (using the username #AdaOkenwa1), wrote, “I don’t know who raised Davido, but all I can say is thank you. You did a great job.”

FindingSolace, who tweets anonymously as #lifeinsolace, wrote, “Let love lead. It costs more to hate than to love. More of this in this space.”

Another user, OneGirlie_vi, who tweets anonymously, wrote, “I love the fact that his beautiful mother doesn’t have hate in her mind like her son. All love.”

Uncle Floyd, who identifies as #MRFLOYD_247, wrote, “That’s the way forward… no matter the disagreement between you and your guy, keep the kids, siblings, and mums out of it. The spirit of love and a mother can’t be compared; she will always love everyone. A mother and also manager.
She loves progressive kids.”

K.A.Y.O.D.E, who identifies as #Dhavidtips, wrote, “A mother is always a source of love and strength.”

The rivalry between Davido and Burna Boy is well-known, with the two music giants frequently exchanging jabs over the years.

In July, Burna Boy shaded Davido after a fan suggested he follow Davido’s example and start a family.

Burna dismissed the comment, referencing Davido’s challenges with one of his baby mamas. When another fan criticised him for the dig, Burna noted how the person hadn’t used the best example.

Their feud reignited last year when Davido referred to Burna Boy as an “upcoming artist” in an interview, emphasizing that he and Wizkid paved the way for younger stars like Burna Boy, Mayorkun, and Asake.
