Emirates ban: FG announces possible resumption of flights to UAE

The federal government has announced the possible resumption of flights between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Direct flights between both countries were suspended in March over issues relating to COVID-19 protocol.

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Mukhtar Muhammad, national incident manager of the presidential steering committee on COVID-19, said that both countries have agreed on the reviewed travel guidelines and conditions imposed by the UAE government.

He explained that the federal government has succumbed to the COVID-19 testing requirement earlier imposed by the UAE government in March 2021 to maintain harmony.

On the resumption of Emirates Airline’s flights to Nigeria, he said there had been extensive deliberation on the matter — gap had been significantly closed between the position of Nigeria and the UAE.

Emirates Airline is the flag carrier of the UAE.

“They have met some of our requirements, and we are just waiting for one confirmation,” NAN quoted Muhammad as saying.

Security operatives barricade Lagos EFCC office ahead of planned protest

Armed security operatives have occupied the entrance to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) office in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The development comes ahead of a youth-led protest tagged #ReformEFCC.

The organisers said the protest is aimed at kicking against some of the modus operandi of the anti-graft agency.

On Wednesday, the EFCC urged parents and guardians to warn their wards against partaking in a planned protest organised by a “shadowy group”.

EFCC claimed that the group has been “actively campaigning on social media, recruiting impressionable young Nigerians, including students, to take up arms against the agency”.

Some Nigerians have been criticising the anti-graft agency for its night raids of hotels, clubs and hostels.

NRC suspends Warri-Itakpe service after train derails

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended the Warri-Itakpe rail service after a train derailed on Thursday.

The train was travelling from Itakpe in Kogi to Ujevwu in Delta when the accident occurred at about 7.15pm.

Ediri Oyibo, a digital strategist who was on board when the accident happened, said the train wobbled along its track at several locations during the journey.

“As a frequent user of the train service, riding on the train from Ujevwu to Itakpe on Wednesday, 3rd of July 2024, I practically had my heart between my teeth when the train wobbled along its track at several locations; one, on top of a valley crossing,” he said.

“Riding on the train, something told me the Warri-Itakpe train service is a disaster waiting to happen. A derailment on top of a valley crossing will spell doom.

“Passengers on the trip reported how the train had earlier overshot a station it was supposed to stop due to brake failure.”

Taribio Walson-Oweifawari, a broadcast journalist who was also on the train, said the coach before hers almost fell off a high point when the train derailed.

“My coach is VIP and it is Coach 1. The coach immediately after ours was Coach 2 and it derailed. Hai!!! I just kept shouting Jesus when it looked like ours was going to tumble. Just a little bit more, that coach would have fallen off the high point, and taking our coach with it,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

On Friday morning, the railway corporation announced the suspension of train operations on the route.

“Due to an unexpected fault, train operations are suspended for today. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding,” the NRC said.

Last year, NRC suspended operations on the Warri-Itakpe rail service after a train derailed at kilometre 30, Ajaokuta-Itakpe section of the track.

Senate gives panel probing ways and means loan two months to submit report

The senate has given the ad hoc committee probing the ‘N30 trillion ways and means’ loan under former President Muhammadu Buhari two months to submit its report.

The upper legislative chamber approved the two-month deadline extension after Isah Jibrin, chair of the committee, requested it on the floor of the senate on Thursday.

On March 11, 2024, Senate President Godswill Akpabio inaugurated the 17-member ad hoc committee to probe the “N30 trillion ways and means” secured under Buhari and report in “six weeks”.

The deadline has since passed and the panel is yet to submit its report.

Jibrin, the senator representing Kogi east, had said the investigation is still ongoing and being intensified, after TheCable reported that the probe was in limbo.

The senator said N30 trillion was arrived at on the basis of the documents provided to his committee by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“We felt like we needed to get more details. We were told that all the records are domiciled with the auditor-general’s office – that is tenors and repayment schedules,” he had said.

“In fact, we were told that Ondo and FCT benefited from the ways and means and that there is a repayment schedule. We have written to them (auditor-general), but they have not written back.”

The ways and means is a loan facility through which the CBN finances the federal government’s budget deficit.

The CBN law limits advances under ways and means to five percent of the previous year’s revenue, but this has been observed mostly in the breach over the years.
