Mo Abudu to make directorial debut with films on mental health
Mo Abudu, the Nigerian film producer, is set to make her directorial debut with two short films.
The filmmaker, in a statement on Monday, confirmed she would be directing the short films titled ‘Her Perfect Life’ and ‘Iyawo Mi’.
The EbonyLife CEO, since her first full-length feature ‘Fifty’ in 2015, has presided over her production company’s storytelling as an executive producer while hiring external film executives for directing.
But in the two films, Abudu will be in charge of the whole filmmaking process in a move that comes about five years after she attended the London Film School for a course in film directing.
‘Her Perfect Life’ follows the story of Onajite Johnson-Ibrahim, a 39-year-old career woman who owns a growing business; has a husband and two kids but decides to “end it all” in her battle with mental illness.
The film stars Pearl Thusi, Joseph Benjamin, Omawunmi Dada, Uzo Osimpka, Christian Paul, and Mary Lazarus.
‘Iyawo Mi’, on the other hand, is a Yoruba language film that tells the story of Kunle, a family man who arrives home one night to find horror awaiting him.
Eniola, his wife, seems to have gone mad; hallucinating, screaming at their children and neighbours, and threatening to kill everyone.
Kunle takes matters into his own hands in a series of events that birth tragic consequences.
The film stars Adedimeji Lateef, Bolaji Ogunmola, Segun Arinze, and Jude Chukwuka.
Speaking about these titles, Abudu said: “I believe in learning and understanding any major assignment I undertake. Directing is an art form that takes years to master, so I’m beginning with baby steps.
“I have written two short films that I will be directing.
“Although these stories are fictional, they highlight the mental health challenges, hardly spoken about in Nigerian society, that many people deal with all over the world.
“Mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, income, or social class, and they are on the increase.”
As an executive producer, Abudu has created a number of critically acclaimed Nollywood films including ‘The Wedding Party’, ‘Chief Daddy’, ‘Your Excellency’, and ’The Royal Hibiscus Hotel’.
As part of a major deal with Netflix, her successes include ‘Castle & Castle’, ‘Oloture’, and ‘Blood Sisters’.
