I created YBNL because I didn’t want to spend all my money on balling, says Olamide

Nigerian Hip Hop superstar Olamide shares the inspiration behind his successful label Yahoo Boy No Laptop.

For over a decade, Olamide has operated at the summit of the Nigerian music industry with his music making him one of the most successful artists from Africa and one whose contributions changed the commercialization of indigenous rap and Street Music in Nigeria.

In an interview with Apple Music Africa Now Radio with Nandi Madiba, Olamide who recently released his highly anticipated tenth album ‘Unruly’ talked about his desire to get back on the road.

“I think the last time I was on stage was probably last year at Mr. Money’s concert in London, but this year in December, if you’re going to Ghana just stop by Nigeria! I’m going to be having my concert in Nigeria. Right after that, I’m going on tour next summer – US tour, Europe and all that – I’m gonna be back on the road man.”

Olamide revealed that his desire to get back on the road is also motivated by his fans who have been clamouring for him to go on tour. He also shared that he delayed getting back on the road because he was working hard to get in tune with the current international ascension of Afrobeats.

“My fans, they’ve been hollering ‘Yo come outside! Come play!’ Now I’m ready. I’ve been on the ground, trying to put in work and get my stuff together because the new wave is so crazy right now and you just have to figure a way to be in tune with time, which is not easy so I’ve been working on that for so long. That’s why it took me so long.”

Asides from being a successful musician, Olamide also runs YBNL which he created in 2012 after leaving ID Cabasa’s Coded Tunes.

The label has churned out several stars including Adekunle GoldLil KeshFireboy producers Pheelz and Young Jonn, and more recently Asake.

According to Olamide, he created YBNL as a way to reinvest in his passion instead of spending his fortunes on balling.

“The world is in love with my stuff, [and] I’m grateful for it but now it’s time to make sure I reinvest in that same thing that’s making you love and appreciate me. It used to be just passion but it’s high time I step up, reinvest and make this a proper business. I set up my own label, and started signing artists because I didn’t want all that money to just go wasted on ballin’ and all that! All that money had to go back into the grind, man. That’s how the whole thing started.”

Olamide’s landmark tenth album ‘Unruly’ was released on August 9th, 2023 which was heralded bu the singles ‘Trumpet’ featuring CKay and ‘New Religion’ featuring Asake. According to Olamide, the album is likely to be his last and it offers listeners a bittersweet experience as they look back on the career of the legendary artist.

Chidimma Adetshina, the recently crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, has finally addressed the claims of identity theft in South Africa.

Chidimma was born in 2001 in Soweto at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Her father is of Igbo descent while some reports said her mother is a Mozambican who had become a naturalized citizen of South Africa.

The model sparked controversy during this year’s Miss South Africa pageant due to her nationality.

This led to a surge of criticism on social media, particularly from South Africans. Chidimma would later withdraw from the Miss South Africa contest.

Her withdrawal came after the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for South Africa alleged that preliminary evidence suggests Chidimma’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft.

Speaking on the matter in an Arise TV interview, the 23-year-old denied any wrongdoing, saying “I didn’t steal anyone’s identity”.

The young woman, however, declined to elaborate, citing ongoing investigations and concerns about potential contradictions.

“I did not steal anyone’s identity. Obviously I am still waiting on the conclusion of the whole case and matter, then moving forward, I will know exactly what to say,” she said.

“Because I feel like now if I say something and something comes out tomorrow, it could be like but you said this then something else. I am just avoiding all those two things contradicting one another.”

On August 14, the model accepted the invitation to participate in this year’s Miss Universe Nigeria pageant. She was recently crowned winner of the pageant.

Speaking on her victory, Chidimma also dismissed insinuations that she won the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant “out of pity”.

She argued that she went through the same rigorous experience as all contestants, adding that “I worked hard to earn my title”.

“A lot of people felt like it was a pity win and I do not think so. I feel like I really worked hard. Coming from the SA journey, we spent 10 weeks in camp,” she said.

“It might have been a slight difference but I feel like, if we have to look at the journey that we have all been through, I feel like I had the same experience that they did.”
