MultiChoice, the organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), on Monday, announced the call for entries for the 10th edition of the ceremony.

The AMVCA is an annual award event that recognises outstanding performances in television, film, and entertainment.

In a statement, the organisers also revealed that the award categories have been reduced from 33 to 27, adding that the development was in order “to meet global trends and standards”.

The 10th edition of AMVCA will now see winners in 25 categories — including 2 special recognition awards.

The statement added that the Best Actor or Best Actress in a Leading or Supporting Role winners will now be determined by a jury, deviating from the previous audience voting system.

Other non-voting categories are Best Director, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Costume Design, Best Writing in a Movie and TV Series, Best Movie and TV Series, Best Short Film, Best Documentary, Best Sound Design, Editing, and Makeup.

The categories open to public voting are Best Scripted and Unscripted Africa Magic Original, Best Digital Content Creator, Best Indigenous Language (West, East, and Southern Africa), Best Multichoice Talent Factory Film, and Best Indigenous Africa Magic Original.

“As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, we are embarking on a bold journey to reevaluate our award categories and further align with global trends and benchmarks,” Busola Tejumola, MultiChoice executive head of content said.

“This involves retiring certain categories, streamlining others and revisiting both voting and non-voting classifications.

“The number of categories for entry will now be 25, accompanied by 2 special recognition awards.

“Performance awards have undergone streamlining and will fall under the categories of ‘Best Actor’ or ‘Best Actress’ in a leading or supporting role.

“Winners in these categories will be determined by the jury, deviating from the previous public voting systems. As always, voting process and results will be verified by Deloitte.”

The award organisers called for submissions of films publicly exhibited between December 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023.

The entry portal will close on February 14.

Guinness World Records confirms Nigeria’s Fola David’s world record for largest drawing

A Nigerian doctor, Fola David-Tolaram, has transformed his passion for art into a groundbreaking achievement, setting a Guinness World Record for creating the world’s largest drawing by an individual.

His artwork, which spans an impressive 1,004.7 m² (10,814.5 ft²), was crafted on the pitch at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos and celebrates Nigeria’s diverse culture.

David-Tolaram, 31, described his work as “a map of Nigeria showing the various cultures,” explaining, “The Nigerian country is a multi-cultural nation. I wanted to create something that speaks to that and give people an avenue to celebrate their cultures.”

Entitled The Unity of Diversity, the piece reflects his experience traveling across Nigeria to immerse himself in the distinct cultural elements that inspired the artwork.

Using a 1,360 m² canvas and waterproof markers, the Lagos-based doctor, who has practiced art professionally for a decade, took two days just to assemble the canvas large enough for his vision.

Beginning from the center, David-Tolaram originally planned to work outward in a circular motion but adjusted his technique as he progressed.

The challenging project, completed over six days, drew enthusiastic spectators who filled the 5,000-seat stadium to watch and cheer him on, creating an “electrifying” atmosphere.

Reflecting on the experience, he shared, “I remember standing right in the center of this canvas, about to start this drawing, and feeling a lot of apprehension and fear… But once I got going, I knew I could do it.”

David-Tolaram described the significance of achieving a Guinness World Records title as “absolutely unbelievable,” noting, “I grew up reading about world records and I never thought that I would be a record title holder. I feel very honored, I feel distinguished, and I feel Officially Amazing.”

Taking to X on November 14, 2024, the reality TV star wrote, “So many bad bitches getting pregnant, yall need to start using your bumbum omg,” hinting that women should opt for anal sex instead of vaginal sex.

Angel’s post sparked lots of reactions across social media, from the streets of X to Instagram, with many flabbergasted, others laughing and some agreeing with her. It also sparked a conversation about the rampant trend of women giving birth outside of marriage and becoming baby mamas.

A curious follower asked her, “Your pardon, madam.!? ” Angel responded, “I beg your own, too.”

“Delete please,” another fan requested, to which Angel said, “No girl, my sisters are in trouble.”

Another comment read, “The baby mama pandemic is gradually becoming a norm in our country and it’s painful because Nigeria is too traditional for all these babymama & baby daddy whatever.”

“I’m telling. Women popping out babies for this men with marriage is the reason most of this men don’t even care about getting married. If they want a baby there’s always a woman go give them a child with Marriage. These men are not under any pressure to get married anymore. All they want is just to be baby mamas and baby daddies,” said another person, in agreement.
