Burna Boy has represented Nigeria abroad more than our ambassadors, says Alibaba

Alibaba, the ace Nigerian comedian, says Burna Boy, the Afrofusion artiste, has “done more for national awareness than any of the country’s ambassadors”.

Alibaba spoke about the impact of the entertainment industry on Nigeria’s economy in a recent interview with Channels TV.

Born Atunyota Akpobome, the 58-year-old lamented that the government did not see prospects in the creative industry years back.

He, however, added that the creative industry’s value has “skyrocketed” and has become one of the major contributors to the nation’s economy.

“Two years ago, a forecast of the economy of Nigeria in the next five years was looked into by the Nigeria Economic Summit Group. Entertainment and the creative industry were not considered. Not one page. In looking forward to Nigeria for the next five years, a booklet of about 200 pages, the creative industry was not there,” he said.

“The value of the creative industry right now? Beyond. For instance, you have a single artiste going to London at the 02 Arena, closing it down and earning close a million, two million pounds, and coming back to Nigeria with that kind of money, even if they took 50% of it… Burna Boy has done a lot more for Nigerian national awareness than any ambassador that has been posted to America, posted to the UK, or posted to any other place.

“So these artistes that are performing are bringing national awareness and making other countries to even know about us than any ambassador would have done.”

Tacha shares her crypto trading success story

Big Brother Naija star Tacha has opened up about her cryptocurrency journey and reflected on her successes and lessons learned along the way.

On July 3, 2024, the reality TV star took to her X account and recounted how she dabbled into crypto trading in 2019 because the idea of sending money without restrictions appealed to her.

She wrote, “Well yeah, every web3 lover has a success story, and I promised y’all mine. When I first got into the crypto space in 2019, Ethereum was around $100. I bought a couple and held them for a while, then sold them when the prices climbed. Not gonna lie, the whole crypto concept made a lot of sense to me. Imagine sending money to anyone around the world without restrictions.”

Tacha noted that during the NFT boom, she ran giveaways to help her fans get into crypto, with many of them making money from the opportunities.

“Fast forward to 2021, when the NFT boom started, then I started working with a lot of NFT projects, and I got into invisible friends! OK bears, amongst many others. I also did a lot of whitelist giveaways and onboarded a lot of my fans into the space. Many of my followers made money from these giveaways,” she added.

However, not every project was successful. She recalled how some did really well while others failed completely, and how this led her to take a break and recover from the losses.

She explained, “I bought into some big projects, and while some did amazingly well, others went to zero. At some point, I wanted to just take a step back and recover from the hit, and that’s one of the reasons why I’ve been off. Anyway, I wanted to do a couple of things differently this year, and coming back into the space was one of them. Moving forward, I’d love to carry y’all along on this journey. Expect Alpha narratives and all things web3! Anything you wanna learn in web3?? Let me know…Happy New Month TITANS”

I used to think all Africans spoke pidgin English, says Simi

Nigerian singer Simi has opened up about a culture shock she experienced in Kenya when she found out that pidgin English wasn’t spoken by all Africans.

The singer appeared as a guest on the recent episode of the 90’s Baby Show, where she highlighted the previous misconception she had about pidgin English, a form of broken English commonly spoken by Nigerians.

Narrating her experience from a previous visit to Kenya, she said, “I went to Kenya years ago, and we were supposed to do a remix of my song with a Kenyan artist, and then there is a lot of pidgin in the song. They asked me to write my lyrics down and then ask, ‘Can you translate?’ and I go, ‘What the fuck do you mean translate? It’s English. It’s pidgin, but it’s English.'”

Simi described that experience as a culture shock because, at the time, she assumed that pidgin English was generally spoken in Africa.

“Before then, I had thought that everybody in Africa could speak pidgin the way we speak pidgin, so that was a culture shock for me. I thought these were our people; are we not the same?” Simi asked.

She also revealed that her 4-year-old daughter Adejare also speaks a little pidgin because she and her husband, Adekunle Gold, speak it at home.

“My daughter even started speaking pidgin by herself because we speak it around her, to our friends. So sometimes she would be like, ‘Wetin you do o’ and I love that because you need to have a gossip language around people,” Simi said.

Angela Simmons has apologised for carrying a gun-shaped purse to the 2024 BET award ceremony.

The 2024 BET Awards aired on Sunday from the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles in the United States.

Simmons attended the event which was held on Sunday night and extended into the early hours of Monday.

The reality TV star wore an emerald-gemmed dress and accessorised with a crystal-embellished purse shaped like a handgun.

She was also seen on the red carpet pointing the gun-shaped purse at the camera.

Her fashion choice sparked immediate controversy on social media where critics called her out for being “tone-deaf and insensitive”.

This was especially given that Sutton Tennyson, her ex-fiancé whom she has a son with, was shot and killed in 2018.

On Monday, the 36-year-old reality star addressed the controversy on Instagram.

Simmons acknowledged that the purse’s symbolism was “inappropriate and insensitive” given her experience with gun violence.

She also apologised to those she had offended by her actions.

“I deeply regret that this item, which symbolizes a gun, was inappropriate and insensitive, especially given my personal and community experiences with gun violence,” she wrote.

“I have personally lost my partner, the father of my child, to gun violence. I have witnessed its devastating impact on my community in Southeast Queens.

“It was a mistake that does not define who I am or my commitment to ending violence. To anyone who was hurt or offended by my actions, I offer my deepest apologies.”
