Court dismisses N500m copyright infringement suit against Kcee, E-Money

A federal high court in Lagos has dismissed a N500 million copyright infringement suit filed against singer Kcee, E-Money, the businessman, and his record label Five Star Music Limited.

Kehinde Ogundare, the presiding judge, on Monday, held that Jude Nnam, the plaintiff, failed to provide credible evidence to prove the copyright infringement allegation.

Nnam, the Nigerian composer, had claimed Kcee secretly added his songs including ‘Som Too Chukwu’, ‘Otito Diri Chineke’ and ‘K’ Anyi Jee N’ Ulo Chukwu’ to his album.

Nnam argued that Kcee added his musical projects to ‘Cultural Praise Vol. 1’ without his consent.

The composer sought a written or oral declaration that the three defendants jointly infringed on his copyright by producing and marketing it without his permission.

He also sought that the defendants pay all royalties from the songs and stop further infringement.

Nnam further sought a damage fee of N500 million from the defendants as well as N5 million as the cost of action.

However, KCee and E-Money denied all the plaintiff’s allegations. They also described Nnam’s claims as “frivolous” and an attempt to extort them.

Aside from the suit dismissal, Ogundare also awarded a punitive cost of N1 million against Nnam.

The copyright infringement lawsuit has been ongoing since 2021.

‘You’re stepping on toes’ — Jaywon hits Odumodublvk for mocking him

Jaywon, the Nigerian singer, has fired back at Odumodublvck after the rapper mocked him on social media.

On Sunday, Odumodublvck shared comparative pictures on his X account.

The images showed the songstress Ayra Starr posing separately with Jaywon and American rapper Future.

“This life ehn,” Odumodublvck captioned the post, implying preferential treatment and sparking ridicule.

Jaywon swiftly responded, questioning Odumodublvck’s accomplishments.

“Lol, you’re already dragging your senior? Who’s going to drag you? You haven’t even started life, and you’re already stepping on toes,” he wrote.

The exchange highlights the tension between the two artistes, with Jaywon asserting his seniority and Odumodublvck seemingly trying to provoke him.

In February, Jaywon had slammed Odumodublvk and Burna Boy for saying “no one paved the way” for them in the music industry.

He added that despite his love for the ‘Declan Rice’ hitmaker, his “music is not all that”.

“I see people like Odumodu, I love Odumodu even though I know his music is not all that but I love the energy. I have watched Odumodu for a while before he even blew up, it was one of my young boy that was distributing his music,” he had said.

Disgruntled by Jaywon’s remark, Odumodublvck lambasted the singer while writing off his music.

He argued that despite his colleague’s years in the music industry, he has “nothing to show for it”.

Mr Jollof’s wife gives VeryDarkMan 24 hours to retract adultery allegation

Esinjemiyotan Atsepoyi, the wife of Mr Jollof, the comedian, has threatened legal action against VeryDarkMan, the controversial activist, for accusing her of adultery.

The Abuja-based activist alleged that Mr Jollof’s wife, through promiscuity, helped him secure his position as the SSA on new media to Sheriff Oborevwori, governor of Delta.

The social media celebrity also claimed Esinjemiyotan had an affair with an internet fraudster at a hotel in Delta.

Prime Chambers, Esinjemiyotan’s lawyers, issued a letter denying the adultery allegations.

The letter described VeryDarkMan’s claim as an “intentional attempt to tarnish our client’s reputation”.

“Professionally, our client worked with Fidelity Bank from 2011 where she rose through the ranks before resigning and going into private enterprise in 2019 as an Event Planner,” the letter reads in part.

“As an Event Planner, she has a wide range of patronage around the Federation and Niger Delta in particular; earning over N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) per annum. She charges between 1 million naira to 5 million naira for events and plans same on most days of every month around each year.

“Sometime on the 15th, 16th and in the early hours of 19th September, 2024, you used your social media verified Instagram handle of “verydarkblackman” with over One Million Seven Hundred Thousand (1,700,000.00) followers to continually record and publish a video about our client wherein you said that she committed adultery against her husband with a “yahoo boy”.

Esinjemiyotan said the allegations have subjected her to “insults and degrading words” on social media.

She also demanded an immediate retraction and public apology in two national newspapers.

The letter added that if VeryDarkMan failed to comply within 24 hours, “we shall have no other option than to take appropriate legal action against you”.

“In view of that, our client’s business social media page (@eventsbybloomsandballoons) is being bombarded with several insults, degrading and unprintable words,” the letter added.

“The verbal assault and defamation of our client by you, is intentionally orchestrated to tarnish our client’s reputation, destroy the peace in her marriage and make her loose patronage in her thriving business.

“TAKE NOTE that should you fail to comply with this modest demand as stated above within the next 24 (Twenty-Four) Hours, we shall have no other option than to take appropriate legal action against you.”

The development comes at about the same time when Falz, the rapper, gave VeryDarkMan a 24-hour ultimatum to retract alleged defamatory statements against him.
