South Africa to strip Chidinma Adetshina of ID, travel documents
Authorities in South Africa are set to revoke the identity and travel documents of Chidimma Adetshina, the Miss Universe Nigeria.
Tommy Makhode, an official at the department of home affairs (DHA), told the South African parliamentary committee on Tuesday about the plan to withdraw Adetshina’s identity documents.
Adetshina was born in 2001 in Soweto at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Her father is of Igbo descent, while some reports said her mother is a Mozambican who became a naturalised citizen of South Africa.
The model sparked controversy during this year’s Miss South Africa pageant due to her nationality, which led to a surge of criticism on social media, particularly from South Africans.
Adetshina would later withdraw from the Miss South Africa contest.
Her withdrawal came after the DHA alleged that preliminary evidence suggested her mother may have committed fraud and identity theft.
Makhode said Adetshina’s mother would also have her documents cancelled as they had both failed to meet Monday’s deadline to provide reasons why they should be eligible to keep them.
The South African official said the case had been referred to the Hawks, a special police unit that investigates serious crimes, which had concluded that it was a “case of fraud”.
He added that officials are awaiting on prosecutors about how to proceed.
After the revelation in August, the department had said that Adestshina “could not have participated in the alleged unlawful actions of her mother as she was an infant at the time”.
She has yet to publicly comment on the development but previously denied allegations of identity theft.
The 23-year-old is now in Mexico to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition to be held on November 16.
She will compete against contestants from across the world, including Mia le Roux, who won the Miss South Africa contest.

Beyoncé, Rihanna, Drake contacted me within three days in 2020, says Tems
Tems, the Nigerian singer, has revealed that Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Drake reached out to her within a three-day span in 2020.
The 29-year-old songstress spoke about her journey to stardom in a recent interview with BigBoy TV.
Tems said Beyoncé’s team reached out, followed by direct messages from Drake and Rihanna.
The Grammy winner described the experience as “surreal,” adding that it felt like “I was dreaming”.
“When I met Wizkid, I had only three songs. We recorded ‘Essence’ in 2019, it came out in 2020 and I released my EP during the pandemic,” she said.
“I didn’t imagine that I would become this big thing. We did ‘Essence’ and things started going off. I started getting messages. Beyoncé reached out in 2020 and my mind was blown. I was like God, what’s going on?
“Because I lived alone throughout the whole time I was in school and when I had a job, I was alone and I was really to my thoughts a lot.
“Beyoncé’s team reached out and I got DMs from people that I looked up to. Other artistes like Drake and Rihanna. These are people that influenced culture very much so for the past 10 years or more. These are people that are very respectable in the industry.
“I was in Nigeria when I got their messages. I was in my house alone when I got everything. In fact I got their messages within three days of each other.
“It felt like something crazy was happening, like it wasn’t real and I was dreaming. I felt like I was being pranked.”
Born Temilade Openiyi, Tems gained popularity in 2020, courtesy of her collaboration with Wizkid, the Afrobeats singer, on the song ‘Essence’.
