Yetunde Wunmi says she lost her marriage, newborn baby due to passion for acting

Yetunde Wunmi, the actress born Taiwo Akinwande, has opened up about the sacrifices she made during her nearly four-decade-long career in theatre.

In an interview with BBC Yorùbá, the 64-year-old said her career as a stage performer began in 1982 under Sunday Akinola’s (Feyi Kogbon) theatre group.

She revealed that her passion for acting sparked after meeting the late legendary filmmaker, Adeyemi Afolayan.

The film star also revealed that her marriage ended due to her passion for acting.

Wunmi recalled taking her one-month-old baby to a performance in Ilorin, Kwara state, despite the child’s illness. She said the child unfortunately passed away at one year and 10 days old.

“Adelove brought the stage drama to Danjuma film close to where I lived then. I cannot forget the man. He wore all white that day. He wore a white shoe and came out from a white car,” she said.

“Everybody ran towards the man and I also went closer to make sure I touched his clothes. I was very happy at the time. It felt like I touched a gold. That was when my interest in theatre started to grow. I lost my marriage due to my love for this theatre.

“I never regretted doing theatre since then because God has been gracious to me.

“One experience I cannot forget was when I joined my boss’ group. I was nursing a baby who was still under 41 days. One day, I said let me stroll out but I saw my group having rehearsals. I asked if there was an outing. My boss’ wife then told me the troop was traveling. I did not tell my husband the truth. I only told him I was going to visit my mother in another town. I followed the troop to Ilorin where we started the stage performances.

“Anytime I was called to the stage to dance, I would use my costume to wrap the baby and give the child to someone and get the child back whenever I was done. The next day, the child was having a high temperature and I went to the pharmacy to get drugs for the baby.

“Two days later, my boss told me to return home due to the baby’s health but I refused and told him I was staying back. I was eventually paid N16 — which was the exact amount I spent on treating the child. I was not concerned because I was just happy to have been a part of the show.

“The most painful part of it was that the baby died after a year and 10 days old. So, the child did not enjoy the success of theatre with me. It is something I will never forget.”

Details about Wunmi’s romantic life are currently unavailable.

Speed Darlington released after 5 days in police detention

The police in Abuja have released Darlington Okoye, the singer better known as Speed Darlington, on bail.

Darlington was initially reported missing for three days, sparking widespread concern. A video later surfaced online showing the singer in handcuffs, suggesting arrest.

Deji Adeyanju, the human rights lawyer, also confirmed that he was arrested in Lagos last Friday and then transferred to Abuja, where he had been detained.

The lawyer revealed that Darlington’s detention stemmed from a formal complaint filed by Burna Boy. He was accused of defaming and cyberstalking the Grammy winner.

The content creator was, however, released to his lawyer on Tuesday evening after meeting the bail conditions set by the police at the intelligence response team’s (IRT) department in Abuja.

In a post via X, Adeyanju appreciated those who contributed to the singer’s release and commended the police in the IRT department for their “professionalism.”

Darlington had taunted Burna Boy over his affiliation with the embattled US rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ who is facing multiple charges for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

He also asked Burna Boy to explain how he won the Grammy award for his album ‘Twice As Tall’ — a project executive produced by Diddy. He claimed there was a sexual relationship between the duo.

Queen, Darlington’s mother, earlier begged Burna Boy to “temper justice with mercy”.

Prioritise having kids over marriage for career success, Laide Bakare tells ladies

Laide Bakare, the Nollywood actress, has shared her unconventional views on balancing career and family.

In an interview with Nollywood On Radio, the film star advised career-oriented single women to have children early if they desire to achieve long-term professional success.

Citing her personal experience, the actress argued that marriage is not necessary to start a family.

“If you are aspiring to be a superstar, successful in your career as a young girl, I would advise you to get married and have kids early,” she said.

“So that you can have the rest of your years to push your career because the family area is very important.

“I know that getting married very early may lead to divorce so I mean starting a family early.

“Maybe I should retract that because I do not mean marriage. I never thought of marriage. The time I had my first child, I just wanted a baby.”

Bakare clarified that her advice wasn’t about marriage but starting a family, emphasizing the importance of having children.

“So the advice is not to get married early but start having a family,” she said.

Bakare also revealed that she had a rift with colleague Eniola Badmus, who misunderstood the advice as a reference to her being childless.

“Recently, I saw Eniola Badmus so we wanted to continue our quarrel and she said I called her childless,” she added.

“So I told her I meant and only said start a family. I meant to start a family not go and get married, just have your kids. Not necessarily marriage but at least have kids.”

Ayo Mogaji, another actress, recently echoed similar sentiments. She advised unmarried women over 35 to consider having children outside wedlock if they desire motherhood.

Bakare was previously married to Olumide Okunfulure, an American-based businessman from Ondo state.

Although their union ended, it produced a daughter named Simi.

The movie star shares two sons with Mutairu Orilowo, her second husband.

The status of her second marriage is however unknown to the public.
