I am not an advocate for divorce – May Yul Edochie reacts to backlash from men

Actress May Yul Edochie has finally responded to the backlash she has been receiving from men after filing for divorce from her ex-husband Yul Edochie in 2023.

During her recent interview with actor and comedian AY Makun on the latest episode of his Glasshouse podcast, the actress sought to clarify a long-standing misconception about herself.

“Some men see me as someone who is misleading their wives,” she stated to clear the air.

She explained her stance on family, emphasising that she deeply values marriage as a foundational part of family life.

“I love family and I love marriage, but there is this misconception about marriage that is totally different, but ideally marriage is the basis of family. Without family, there would be no you or me; that’s how it used to be,” May explained.

The actress debunked the claims, saying, “I am not in any way advocating divorce or separation in any way, not at all. Let me categorically state it here that I am not an advocate for divorce.”

This comes a year after she filed for divorce from her ex-husband Yul Edochie, who had taken a second wife. Her suit was on the grounds of adultery, noting that she and Yul got married under the 1970 Marriage Act, which states that neither man nor woman can have more than one wife/husband at a time. She then took both Yul and his new wife, Judy Austin, to court for ₦100 million in damages.

May also reportedly filed for a court order restraining Yul from gaining access to their former matrimonial home. The restraining order was filed on grounds of security and safety concerns, bearing in mind how Yul’s behaviour has been ‘erratic, irrational, aggressive, and increasingly threatening.’. She claimed that she did this to feel safe and protected for both herself and her children.

Nigerian artiste Tems has opened up about how fame has drastically changed her daily routine, impacting even little areas of her life like being able to drive herself around Lagos.

Speaking during her recent guest appearance on Big Boy TV, the singer spoke about her journey into fame and the challenge of adjusting to it and having to let go of the solitude she once had.

When asked if she’s well known in Nigeria, Tems responded, “I am very famous at home, so I can’t really go anywhere.”

She continued, “And we have area boys, and they know who I am, so I can’t drive anywhere. I used to try to drive before but I almost got mobbed last year because I attempted to drive myself. Now I have to have police cars in front and at the back, and if I want to drive myself, there must be police diving behind me. If in trying to live a normal life again and feel normal, I have to have police escorts in front and at the back if I’m in Nigeria. If I say I want to be behind the wheel and feel like the normal girl, I can’t.”

The Afrobeat star also opened up about her personal journey adapting to fame, admitting it hasn’t always been easy, especially because of her introverted nature.

She admitted, “I didn’t take it well at first, the fame. After some time I just wanted some alone time and wanted to go back to my room and be alone. Even with my team, adapting to having to talk and have conversations was strange because I never had to do that before so I didn’t take it well at all. I was very blunt, rude… I wouldn’t say rude, but I’d say things that were obvious, but I wasn’t meant to say them.”

Tems explained how she even used to confront people who said wrong things about her, not knowing that she was not supposed to do things like that anymore as a famous person.

“When I hear someone say something about me, I would go to them and be like, ‘do we have a problem? are we okay?’ and then I was told that I wasn’t supposed to confront people,” she said.

Zicsaloma, the Nigerian skit maker, has expressed gratitude to God for protecting him and his team from a potentially disastrous incident.

On Friday, the online comedian shared footage on Instagram showing the aftermath of his POP ceiling collapse in his home’s sitting room.

POP, also called plaster of Paris, is one of the most preferred materials used to make a false ceiling.

According to Zicsaloma, the incident occurred shortly after some members of his team, who had been camping at his residence for three days, left the room.

The skit maker added that no one was injured, except for the ceiling fan which was damaged in the incident.

“Na God dey save person. I was sleeping upstairs I just heard a sound in my sleep. I woke up, confused about what was happening. I was even scared to go down thinking my building was collapsing,” he said.

“Coming down, see what I saw. The sitting room Pop ceiling collapsed. I just finished a shoot where people were sleeping in the sitting room. Just imagine they were here.

“They just left and they have been camping for three days. Thank God it is just the fan that broke. All the Pop just came down.

“That is why it is good to get good artisans to build your house. They will tell you they are trained so try to verify.”
