5 ways to avoid stampede at your event

Published

on

Mass gatherings, such as concerts, festivals, and sporting events, attract large crowds, creating vibrant and memorable experiences but also posing risks like stampede.

However, these events also pose the risk of stampede, which can result in serious injuries or even fatalities.

To safeguard attendees and ensure a positive experience, organisers must implement the following five safety measures:

Control the Crowd Flow

Effective crowd management is fundamental in preventing stampedes. Event organisers should: Design entry and exit points to facilitate smooth movement and minimize congestion. Utilize barriers and clear signage to guide attendees and prevent bottlenecks.

Deploy security personnel strategically to monitor crowd behavior and swiftly address potential surges or disruptions.

Monitor and Manage Capacity

Overcrowding is a leading cause of stampedes, making capacity management essential. Organisers should: Ensure the number of attendees remains within the venue’s safe capacity by regulating ticket sales and monitoring entries.

Conduct a thorough assessment of the venue’s maximum capacity to avoid overcrowding and ensure sufficient space for movement.

Communicate Clearly

Clear communication can prevent confusion and panic among attendees. To achieve this:

Use public address systems, digital screens, and signage to share information about exits, schedules, and emergency procedures.

In the event of an emergency, provide calm, concise, and consistent instructions to guide the crowd safely and prevent chaos.

Train and Equip Staff

Well-prepared staff are crucial to managing large crowds effectively. Organisers should:

Conduct regular training sessions on crowd management and emergency response for all staff and security personnel.

Equip staff with radios and other communication tools to ensure efficient coordination during the event.

Perform emergency drills to reinforce preparedness and clarify roles for everyone involved.

Prepare for Emergencies

Having a robust emergency plan is essential for ensuring safety. This plan should include: Protocols for crowd control, medical emergencies, and evacuation procedures.

Sufficient medical personnel and first aid stations on-site to handle any injuries promptly. Clearly marked and easily accessible emergency exits to facilitate a quick and orderly evacuation if necessary.

The event, held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), was part of an annual celebration across five IBILE divisions of Lagos — including locations in Ikorodu, Badagry, Agege, and Epe.

Wizkid marked his entry to the stage with ‘Soco’, one of his hit songs, while engaging the fans who cheered him along.

He also performed ‘Bad To Me’ with accompanying dance moves. Tiwa Savage performed ‘Who’s Your Guy’ to the energetic crowd, while Olamide took them back in memory lane with his hit song ‘Durosoke’.

Other notable performers at the concert included Adekunle Gold, Seyi Vibez, 9ice, BNXN, and Adewale Ayuba, the fuji maestro.

The concert came to an abrupt end when Burna Boy walked off the stage after an overzealous fan attempted to grab him.

“This end-of-year celebration is more than an event; it is a tribute to the dynamic spirit of Lagos and its people. With music, dance, food, and a breathtaking fireworks display, we are dedicated to creating an unforgettable experience for everyone,” she said.
