Customs dissolves joint border patrol team, reduces checkpoints

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dissolved its joint border patrol team (JBPT).

A statement on Tuesday by Abdullahi Maiwada, NCS national public relations officer, said the decision was made after due consultation with the office of the national security adviser (ONSA).

He added that it was also part of the NCS’ efforts to strengthen border management and reinvigorate its 2025 enforcement strategy.

“This strategy is aimed at removing bottlenecks associated with trade, strengthening border security, combating smuggling, and facilitating legitimate trade,” he said.

Maiwada added that Adewale Adeniyi, NCS comptroller-general (CG), had approved the reduction of customs checkpoints across the country to streamline its operations and to ease movement of goods and persons.

According to the statement, Adeniyi said the NCS would shift reliance to intelligence.

“Moving forward, customs operations will rely more on actionable intelligence and strategic risk management frameworks to enhance efficiency and effectiveness,” the statement quoted the CG as saying.

“Also, the service is deploying geospatial tools and advanced technologies to ensure the effectiveness of NCS enforcement strategies.

“This development underscores the service’s commitment to leveraging innovative, intelligence-driven approaches for effective border enforcement and anti-smuggling operations.”

The statement commended the efforts of the JBPT and emphasised the NCS’ commitment to improving border security.

Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), says the federal government has submitted most of the requirements for Simon Ekpa’s extradition to Nigeria.

Ekpa, a pro-Biafra agitator and secessionist, was arrested by Finland law enforcement on November 21.

A district court in Päijät-Häme later sent the Finland-based Ekpa to prison for “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media”.

Musa spoke on Channels Television’s 2024 year-end review programme on Tuesday.

“Well, I’m sure he is cooling off somewhere. Legal action is going to be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say much about that, but I’m happy he has been arrested,” he said.

“The Federal Government has actually forwarded most of the requirements to the Finnish Government. So, I’m sure the right thing will be done.”

ECOWAS approves increased compensation for passengers affected by flight cancellation

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a higher compensation rate for passengers whose flights are cancelled or delayed across member states.

The approval is contained in the final communique of the ECOWAS Sixty-Sixth Ordinary Summit.

According to the statement, the bloc, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, discussed the severe negative impact of high air transport costs on the growth of the region’s aviation industry as well as ECOWAS’s larger economic and regional integration agendas.

The communique said in order to lower the severe impact of the cost of air transport services in the community, the ECOWAS authority adopted the supplementary Act to the regional common policy on aviation charges, taxes, and fees.

“The Authority also endorses the regional strategy which includes, among others, a 25% reduction of passenger and security charges and the removal of taxes applied to air transport, in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) principles and procedures on Taxes, Fees and Charges, which prohibits taxing of air transport services based on the non-relatedness, transparent and related pricing principles,” the communique reads.

“To ensure a holistic improvement of the region’s air transport industry, the Authority also approves the Regulation establishing a common framework for Aviation Security and the increased rate of compensation for passengers who are denied boarding of flights through an amendment of Article 4 of the Supplementary Act on delayed boarding, flight cancellations and denied boarding.

“The authority directs ministers in-charge of Air Transport and the Commission to coordinate and monitor the effective and uniform application of the Supplementary Acts and Regulations in all Member States, while ensuring that Airlines also comply with cost reduction obligations to ensure that ticket prices reflect the reductions to benefit all Community citizens and populations.”

In the communique, ECOWAS commended the progress made in completing the technical engineering designs and other preparatory arrangements for the construction of the 1028-kilometre (km) Abidjan-Lagos corridor highway.

“The Authority further commends the progress made in completing the financial and technical studies for the Praia-Dakar Shipping and Maritime Link and the alignment definition of the Dakar-Abidjan Highway,” the communique added.

The authority said it was aware of the consultations initiated with the African Development Bank (AfDB), ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development, and other partners to raise the investment finance required to construct the highway and establish the shipping line.

ECOWAS also directed the commission to undertake extensive resource drives with the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and AfDB to raise private and public financing for implementation mobilisation.

The Nigerian military has declared Bello Turji, a notorious terrorist and bandit leader, a “dead man walking”.

Edward Buba, director of defence media operations, told journalists in Abuja on Tuesday that Turji operates in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger states.

“Take it from me, he (Turji) is merely a dead man walking, as he will soon follow suit with many others that have been eliminated during the course of the year,” Buba said.

“To refresh your memory, I will reveal some of the names of notable terrorist leaders that we have taken out since January this year.

“These include: Halilu Sububu, Dutse Mainasara Idda, Mallam Saleh Umaru, Mohammed Amadu, Abubakar Musa, Adamu Tanko Ibrahim, Yellow Dogon Rakumi, Isiya Boderi and Alhaji Baldu.

“Others are Usman Modi Modi, Kachalla Halilu, Kachalla Tukur, Amir Ibrahim Bukar, Saidu Hassan Yellow, Buba Kachalla Bukar, Bakura Jega, Abba Tukur amongst others.”

Speaking on military operations in 2024, Buba said troops eliminated “thousands” of terrorists and their commanders across the country.

“The troops had sustained pressure on the terrorist enclaves, hideouts, and strongholds as an incentive to speedily defeat the terrorists and hastily end the war,” Buba said.

“During the course of the year, troops eliminated thousands of terrorists and also their commanders and combatants among others.

“We are also sure that similar fate awaits those parading themselves as terror leaders and commanders today.”

Buba noted that the military will continue to deploy “overwhelming force” to defend the country against terror attacks and ensure the safety of citizens.

He added that intensified operations had led to the surrender of several terrorist leaders, combatants, and their families.
