Debbie Nelson, the mother of United States rapper Eminem, has died at age 69.

Eminem’s spokesperson confirmed Nelson’s demise on Tuesday. The rapper’s representative said she died on Monday night in St. Joseph, Missouri after battling with lung cancer for many years.

However, Eminem has not publicly commented on his mother’s death.

Nelson gained public recognition through Eminem’s song lyrics, which highlighted their turbulent relationship.

The rapper spotlighted their rocky relationship for several years in songs including ‘My Name Is’, ‘Headlights’ and ‘Cleanin’ Out my Closet’.

Nelson filed a $10 million lawsuit against Eminem, born Marshall Mathers, for defamation and emotional distress.

She had cited 25 remarks he had made in various interviews accusing her of drug abuse and violent behavior during his upbringing.

However, the rapper revealed the suit was later settled out of court in his song ‘Without Me’.

In 2008, Nelson published a memoir, ‘My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem,’ with the subtitle “Setting the record straight on my life as Eminem’s mother”.

She provided details about the rapper’s early life, the good times they had while asserting that Eminem still loves her but “just confused”.

“In my heart I know Marshall still loves me. He’s just confused,” she wrote.

Thousands sign petition to bar Chris Brown from performing in South Africa

Women For Change, a South African non-profit organisation (NGO), has launched a petition to prevent Chris Brown from performing at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on December 14.

The concert, which was announced in September, has sold out, but the NGO is urging the South African government to deny Brown a visa entry into the country due to his “history of violence against women”.

Brown was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. He has also faced multiple accusations of violence against other women.

The organisation argued that allowing him to perform in South Africa would be a “direct insult” to women and girls affected by gender-based violence, particularly given the show’s timing, which falls just days after the “global commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence”.

“Women For Change calls on concert organisers ‘big concerts’, promoters, and the South African government to reconsider the decision to allow Chris Brown to perform in Johannesburg on 14 December 2024,” the petition reads in part.

“His concert is scheduled just days after the global commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, making this event a direct insult to the millions of women and girls affected by violence in South Africa and worldwide.

“Chris Brown has a well-documented history of violence towards several women. In 2009, he was convicted of brutally assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, a case that sparked global outrage.

“Despite his conviction, his troubling behaviour has continued, with multiple accusations of violence against other women, with ‘Quiet on Set’ Producers Announce the ‘Chris Brown: A History of Violence’ Documentary, which will premiere this October.”

The petition which was initiated on October 2 has garnered nearly 52,000 signatures.

The projects of Rema, Tems, and Ayra Starr have been listed among Rolling Stone’s ‘best 100 albums of 2024’.

The list, which was released on Monday, spotlights outstanding albums that have enjoyed global success in the year.

The magazine described ‘Heis‘, Rema’s second studio album which secured the number 11th spot in the list, as a “unique, buzzy and visceral” project.

“Heis sounds more like a rave than almost anything Rema has made prior raging while everything else simmers. The result is the buzzy, visceral, sweat-it-out music that no one else in the mainstream is making,” it wrote.

Tem’s debut album ‘Born in the Wild‘ earned the 37th spot due to the “physical and emotional listening experience” it gives.

“Her debut album measures the soul work it’s taken to get here. All of it has paid off on an album so rich that the listening experience is a physical one as much as it is emotional,” the magazine wrote.

Starr’s second album ‘The Year I Turned 21′ clinched the 53rd position. According to Rolling Stone, the album showcased the singer’s “musical maturity and enviable passion”.

“Ayra Starr asserts a musical maturity that be could be considered far beyond her years but perhaps more aptly serves as a reminder of the emotional depth, logical process and enviable passion young people possess,” it added.

In 2022, Asake’s debut album ‘Mr Money with the Vibe’ made the US magazine’s list.
