The Controversial Stance of Elon Musk: US Should Leave NATO and UN

On March 1 tech billionaire Elon Musk made a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, expressing agreement with a post advocating for the U.S. to withdraw from NATO and the U.N.

In response to a right-wing political commentator’s post calling for the U.S. to leave NATO and the U.N., Musk wrote, “I agree.”

This development follows the introduction of a bill by several Republican lawmakers proposing the U.S. exit from the U.N., citing a lack of alignment with the America First agenda of the Trump administration.

The U.S. was among a few countries, including Russia, Belarus, Israel, and Hungary, that opposed a U.N. resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

Both NATO and the U.N. were established by the U.S. and other World War II victors to foster diplomacy, cooperation between nations, and prevent global conflicts.

Musk, an unelected official, currently leads the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, which has significantly reduced government spending, including foreign aid.

President Donald Trump has criticized NATO members for insufficient military contributions and called for a spending target of 5% of GDP for all members.

While Kyiv views NATO membership as essential protection against Russian aggression, Trump dismissed Ukraine’s chances of joining the alliance in February, suggesting that its bid triggered the conflict—a narrative echoed by Russian state propaganda.
