Zamfara Government Confirms Lead Poisoning Crisis In Bungudu Council Area

The Zamfara State government has officially acknowledged a lead poisoning incident in the Bungudu Local Government Area.

According to a recent announcement from the Ministry of Health, Information Officer Suleiman Isa stated that Governor Dauda Lawal has ordered the immediate dispatch of emergency teams in response to reports of heavy metal exposure.

“Rapid response medical units have been sent to Bungudu LGA to diagnose and treat affected individuals, working in tandem with local clinics and a range of expert consultants,” the statement explained.

Additionally, a specialised team of environmental health professionals and medical practitioners is investigating the source and scale of the contamination.

The government is also collaborating with community leaders and residents to disseminate critical information and provide necessary assistance.

Zamfara State is partnering with organisations including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to manage the crisis.

Public education campaigns are being intensified, emphasising the importance of hygiene, access to clean water, and adherence to safe environmental practices.

Residents showing symptoms associated with heavy metal poisoning — such as severe abdominal pain, headaches, or developmental concerns — are advised to seek immediate medical attention.

Historically, the region, a major hub for gold mining, has experienced similar incidents.

In 2017, the Emir of Bukkuyum reported that lead poisoning in the Yar Galma community resulted in the tragic loss of 300 children.
