The Yobe State House of Assembly has revealed plans to address the persistent flooding challenges in Yusufari town.

During a sitting presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, on Tuesday, Hassan Mohamed, representing Yusufari Constituency, called for urgent action to protect the lives and properties of residents affected by recurrent floods.

Hassan called on the House to mandate the House Committees on Environment and Disaster Management to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the situation in Yusufari.

“May I appeal to the House to direct the relevant House committees, especially the House Committees on Environment and Disaster, to conduct the spot assessment and other international partners to address the flood situations in the area,” Hassan said.

He also urged the state executive to direct the Yobe Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape to deploy experts to implement flood mitigation measures ahead of the rainy season.

Hassan also appealed to international development partners and NGOs operating in disaster risk management to provide technical support, capacity building, and funding to enhance the town’s flood resilience.

The motion received unanimous support from members, who emphasised the need for swift and decisive action.

Mashio commended the initiative and stressed the importance of forwarding the motion to the Presidential Committee on Environment to ensure Yobe State receives its fair share of national environmental interventions.

He called on members to follow up with relevant stakeholders to ensure the motion translates into concrete action, not only in Yusufari but also in other flood-prone areas across the state.
