Real Madrid supporters’ group demands Mbappe apology over Ceuta shirt protest
A Real Madrid supporters’ group has demanded a public apology from Kylian Mbappe and two of his teammates after they declined to fully wear a shirt expressing support for people in Ceuta.
Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Ibrahima Konate wore the tribute shirts partially rolled up before Real Madrid’s 3-2 La Liga victory over Elche.
The shirts carried the message “we are all Ceutans” and were intended to show support for residents of the Spanish territory amid a migration and humanitarian crisis.
Ultras Sur, a supporters’ group that has been associated with the far right, criticised the three players and called for public apologies.
The group also criticised Real Madrid president Florentino Perez over his response to the incident.
La Liga president Javier Tebas also criticised the players’ decision not to wear the shirts in the same way as their teammates.
Mbappe later explained his position, saying he stood in solidarity with the people of Ceuta while also wanting to acknowledge migrants who had lost their lives or were living in difficult conditions.
He said his gesture was intended to show concern for both groups affected by the crisis.
Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the North African coast, has recently experienced increased migration pressure from neighbouring Morocco.
