Powering Growth: Jigawa States Innovative Approach to Food Security

Governor Umar Namadi recently inaugurated the Lallashi Borehole-Based Irrigation Scheme in Maigatari Local Government Area, a significant milestone in the efforts to improve food security and modernize agriculture in Jigawa State.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, the governor emphasized the importance of this project. The irrigation scheme, powered by solar energy and utilizing semi-conduit and drip irrigation techniques, will allow for year-round farming and create economic opportunities for local farmers.
Covering 10 hectares and supported by four industrial boreholes, the irrigation scheme is expected to directly benefit 80 smallholder farmers. This will lead to increased crop yields and improved livelihoods for the community.
Governor Namadi reiterated his administration’s dedication to implementing the 12-Point Agenda, with a particular focus on expanding irrigation infrastructure through borehole-based systems and dams. He also announced that similar projects in Birniwa and Kafin Hausa are nearing completion, with additional irrigation initiatives planned for Gumel, Sule Tankarkar, and Gagarawa in the 2025 budget.

The governor highlighted the project’s role in reducing reliance on seasonal rainfall, enhancing agricultural productivity, and boosting farmers’ incomes. These efforts align with his administration’s broader vision for sustainable development in the state.
