Gladys Knight’s son claims her husband plans to ‘work her to death’

The son of legendary American singer Gladys Knight has raised fresh concerns about his mother’s health and touring schedule, accusing her husband and manager, William McDowell, of pushing the 82-year-old singer to continue working.

Shanga Hankerson claimed that he fears his mother could be worked until she dies if her current touring schedule continues.

His comments followed claims from an attendee that Knight appeared to struggle during a recent performance in Tulsa.

Hankerson has previously made allegations concerning his mother’s wellbeing and the way her affairs are being managed.

McDowell has denied claims that Knight is being forced to perform and has maintained that the singer continues touring because she wants to.

Knight herself has also previously rejected her son’s allegations concerning her health and personal affairs.

She has described herself as healthy and happy and disputed allegations of mental or financial abuse.

The family dispute has attracted public attention as Knight continues performing decades into a career that has established her as one of America’s most celebrated soul singers.

Knight, popularly known as the “Empress of Soul,” rose to fame as the lead singer of Gladys Knight & the Pips and is known for songs including “Midnight Train to Georgia.”
