Court sentences nine crude oil thieves to 10 years in prison
The Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced nine men to 10 years in prison following their conviction over crude oil theft.
The convicts were among 19 suspects arrested during an intelligence-led operation jointly conducted by the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Navy.
Justice Joy Ikpeme convicted the nine defendants on two counts involving conspiracy and tampering with an oil pipeline.
The offences were prosecuted under the Miscellaneous Offences Act.
The court sentenced each defendant to five years’ imprisonment on the first count and 10 years on the second count, without an option of fine.
The sentences will run concurrently, meaning each convict will serve a maximum prison term of 10 years under the judgment.
The suspects had been arrested after security operatives uncovered an illegal crude-oil operation at the ASABO-D oil wellhead in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Security authorities say crude oil theft and illegal bunkering continue to cause substantial economic losses while contributing to environmental damage in oil-producing communities.
The remaining 10 suspects are expected to face further legal proceedings
