‘We want durable cars’ — senate gives reasons for purchase of luxury vehicles

The senate has given reasons for the planned purchase of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for members of the upper legislative chamber despite the economic hardship in the country.

Speaking with reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, Sunday Karimi, chairman of the committee on services, said the lawmakers want vehicles that would last for the next four years.

The national assembly has come under fire over the proposed purchase of expensive vehicles for the lawmakers.

Since the removal of the petrol subsidy by the federal government on May 29, the cost of living in the country has skyrocketed.

Karimi said an analysis was done before the senate arrived at ordering Land Cruiser SUVs for the senators.

“I said the decision that we took on using Land Cruiser is — you know they have exchanged the price analysis and other sections, including the cost and durability. Are you getting me?” he said.

“Before they came up with this, it is not the decisions of the senators alone, we did an analysis before arriving at Land Cruiser.

“If you go to state houses of assembly today, check out, most of them, before they were even inaugurated, the governor would have bought vehicles waiting for them. Even local government chairmen.

“I drove the vehicle my local government chairman uses, so why [not the] national assembly?

“The cost, let me tell you, hello, listen to me, you know I am the chairman service, when I came into the senate, when they gave me their liability, they have a liability of over N16 billion that is made up of different things including vehicles of 7th assembly, 8th and 9th assembly.

“If you are a businessman and you supplied vehicles for somebody in 2014 or 2015 or so and up till now they are owing you.”

Court dismisses PDP’s appeal, affirms Alex Otti as Abia state governor

The court of appeal in Lagos, on Saturday, upheld the election of Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP) as the governor of Abia state.

Okey Ahiwe, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had earlier challenged the outcome of the election at the tribunal.

Ahiwe claimed that Otti was unqualified to run for the election as he was not a registered member of the LP.

He added that the governor forged his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.

On October 6, the tribunal upheld the election of Otti as the governor of the state.

Reacting to the appeal court’s ruling, Ahiwe, in a statement by Victor Nwokocha, his media adviser, called on party members and supporters to remain calm.

He expressed confidence in God and the judiciary.

He added that his legal team would review the judgment of the appeal court for further action.

“When we embarked on the journey to reclaim our mandate through judicial processes, it was a calculated resolution and we were conscious that the journey would not be a sprint but a peculiar marathon with inevitable twists and turns,” he said.

“Our destination was clearly defined from the onset, and our focus is unchanged. So, at this juncture, our faith in God is renewed, as well as our solid confidence in the judiciary.

“I therefore encourage all my supporters to stay calm, keep praying to God, and look beyond the eclipse of transitional sunset.”

He expressed gratitude to God, his supporters across political party lines, his dynamic legal team, family, friends, and well-wishers.

Dino Melaye, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the just concluded Kogi governorship election, says no sane person will go to the tribunal over the results of an election.

Melaye spoke on Wednesday during a briefing with the media in Abuja.

The politician alleged that the judiciary has been compromised.

“Judiciary is no longer the last hope of the ordinary people,” he said.

“Why should any responsible person go to the tribunal? I have lost complete confidence in the judiciary.”

On November 12, the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Usman Ododo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Kogi governorship election.

Ododo polled 446, 237 votes to defeat Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) who came second with 259,052 votes.

Melaye of the PDP scored 46,362 votes.

During the poll, the PDP candidate had said there were problems in Ogori Magongo LGA and five LGAs in Kogi central.

“That was a huge disappointment because I thought INEC would use this opportunity to redeem its image,” he had said.
