Hubert Hurkacz has defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time in his career, knocking the four-time champion out of the Shanghai Masters in straight sets.

The Polish player produced a dominant serving performance to beat Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in Friday’s second-round encounter.

The victory sent Hurkacz into the third round and ended Djokovic’s campaign in his opening match of the tournament.

Hurkacz ends 0-8 record against Djokovic

Djokovic entered the match having won all eight of his previous meetings with Hurkacz.

That perfect head-to-head record ended as the former world No. 6 fired 13 aces and 28 winners, completing the upset in one hour and 27 minutes.

Hurkacz gave Djokovic few opportunities on serve and maintained control throughout the match.

The result also extended the Pole’s Shanghai winning streak to eight matches.

Hurkacz won the tournament in 2023 but missed the 2024 and 2025 editions.

Djokovic exits days after China Open triumph

The defeat came just days after Djokovic won a record seventh China Open title in Beijing.

The 39-year-old defeated Alex de Minaur in Tuesday’s final after the Australian retired with a groin injury early in the second set.

Djokovic therefore arrived in Shanghai in strong form despite describing the 2026 season as physically difficult.

His Shanghai campaign ended at the first hurdle, however, after Hurkacz produced one of his strongest performances of the season.

The Serbian is a four-time Shanghai Masters champion, most recently winning the tournament in 2018.

Hurkacz will next face either Lorenzo Musetti or China’s Zhou Yi.
