Our movies are better than Hollywood and Bollywood, says Nkem Owoh

Published

The Nollywood movie legend, Nkem Owoh a.k.a Osuofia, on Thursday described Nigerian movies’ stories as far better than that of their Bollywood and Hollywood counterparts.

Osuofia made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.

According to him, Nigerian movies present real life stories and happenings around them, so it is wrong to compare the quality of Nigerian films with those coming from the advanced countries.

He said that Nigerian film producers were only using technology imported from such advanced countries.

“The storyline we take is better than any story from any woods, we don’t have the technology, but we have the story.

“We are a third world country coming up, and people should give us kudos for the level we have attained.

“I believe, with the stories and creativity among us, if we get the needed technology, we will go places”.

The thespian stated that with the available technology in place, Nollywood had been to the next level of improvement.

Osuofia, who rated Nollywood high, said, “If you check the time and how we started, you give kudos because we are making a tremendous progress in the industry.

“With the kind of technology we have now, I believe Nollywood has a very far distance to go positively”.

He, however, called for patience among upcoming actors, saying they should follow their progress gradually.

“If it is not your calling, move away,” Owoh said.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has dismissed rumours that Mercy Johnson was involved in the boat accident that claimed the life of Junior Pope.

Pope died in April after he fell into the River Niger in Asaba, Delta state. He was on his way to a movie location.

The actor passed away alongside four other crew members in the boat accident.

There were, however, rumours that survivor Thank God Ikoma, while testifying about his escape, mentioned that Emeka Mercy Johnson was on the boat.

Emeka once served as Mercy Johnson’s personal assistant and goes by the sobriquet Emeka Mercy Johnson. The development implied that the actress was involved in the tragic incident.

However, in a statement signed by Abubakar Yakubu, national secretary of the AGN, the guild maintained that Mercy was not on the boat.

The AGN said the reports were “utterly false, baseless, unfounded and idiotic” while asking the public to disregard them.

“Our attention has just been drawn to a disturbing and shocking mis- interpretation of statement of ordeal revealed by one of the survivors of the Asaba boat mishap which claimed the lives of Jnr Pope and four other crew members recently,” the statement reads.

“The revelation was made by Thank God Ikoma during a thanks giving service in a church recently where he mentioned that one Emeka Mercy Johnson who had served as a PA to Actress Mercy Johnson in the past and always referred to as Emeka Mercy Johnson apparently as his sobriquet.

“We vehemently condemn the bloggers this malicious mis-interpretation of the statement and urge our members, the general public and fans of Mercy Johnson to ignore the social media news as it is utterly false, baseless, unfounded and idiotic as Mercy Johnson was NOT on the ilI- fated boat.

“The mis-interpretation of the revelation was nothing but imagination of the blogger who could have been high on some substances. Please, ignore and disregard the statement and which was a calculated attempt to malign, smear and tarnish the good name, image and reputation of Mercy Johnson.”

A Nigerian man, identified as Young C, has spent 23 hours buried alive in a coffin.

In an update on his Instagram account on Thursday he said, “Guys, I am still alive, I am still fine, I am okay. A lot of you might think something has happened, but nothing has happened, I am fine.

Breathing heavily he said, “My problem is just that I have run out of water, I might be forced to drink this (my urine). Guys, I am fine.”

Young C had embarked on this daring challenge on Wednesday, announcing his intention to be buried alive for 24 hours.

He shared a video on his Instagram account, emphasizing that the stunt was genuine and not a hoax. He also announced his plan to broadcast live footage from the coffin at night.

In an earlier update, Young C revealed that he had been buried for over 8 hours and was experiencing physical discomfort, including excessive sweating.

He shared a video from the coffin, showing his camera and light still functioning, and expressed his determination to complete the challenge.

This feat is reminiscent of a similar challenge undertaken by American YouTube personality MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), who buried himself alive for 50 hours two years ago to raise awareness about deforestation.

Recently, MrBeast attempted to break his record by spending 7 consecutive days buried in a coffin.

Despite facing physical and mental challenges, he completed the challenge and was finally exhumed, cautioning viewers against attempting similar stunts due to the potential dangers involved.
