Flood kills UNIZIK Primary School pupil in Awka

A pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School in Awka, Anambra State, has died after floodwaters swept away a school shuttle carrying pupils during heavy rainfall.

The pupil, identified as Success Ezenwafor, was among children travelling to school when their vehicle became trapped in rapidly rising floodwaters along the Awka–Nibo–Nise–Enugwu-Ukwu Ring Road.

Seven pupils and two adults were rescued and taken to hospital, but Success was swept away during the incident.

His body was later recovered following a search operation.

Awka South Local Government Chairman Chinedu Okafor confirmed the recovery and said the other children involved in the incident were in stable condition and receiving treatment.

A member of Success’ family said the boy reportedly broke one of the shuttle’s windows while it was trapped, creating an escape route that helped some of the other occupants get out.

That account came from the family and has been reported by multiple Nigerian outlets.

The incident has renewed concerns about flooding and drainage conditions in parts of Awka following heavy rainfall.

Residents have increasingly been urged to exercise caution around flooded roads and avoid attempting to drive or walk through fast-moving water.
