The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended Okpravero Ufuoma, an assistant superintendent of immigration II (ASI II), for soliciting money from a traveller.

A video with the caption: ‘This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria’, has been making the round on social media.

In the clip, the officer was seen asking for money from a traveller at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

In a statement on Wednesday, Kemi Nandap, NIS comptroller general, said the officer’s conduct does not reflect the values and ethics of the NIS.

She condemned the alleged misconduct in the strongest terms, saying it undermined ongoing reforms.

She added that the officer has been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures.

“This disgraceful act is not a representation of our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy,” the statement reads.

“The public is reminded that electronic gates (e-gates) are being installed at all of the country’s international airports to facilitate smoother travel for all passengers, particularly Nigerians.

“Among other benefits, this measure aims to prevent incidents like the one involving OKPRAVERO C. UFUOMA.

“As a result, the officer in question has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, which are in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules.

“The NIS reiterates its commitment to identifying and removing corrupt elements within its ranks, in line with our Zero-Tolerance for Corruption policy.

“We assure the public that the NIS will continue to strive for excellence in service delivery, in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration.”

The first 50 vehicles that pass inspection at each of the six locations will be fitted with free CNG conversion kits, allowing owners to refuel at N230 per SCM of CNG at any NIPCO station, leading to significant savings compared to petrol.

The announcement was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, inviting Lagos residents to take advantage of this unique opportunity.
