João Pedro, Reece James could face Brentford as Alonso awaits fitness decisions

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso says João Pedro and Reece James remain in contention for the club’s Premier League clash with Brentford despite recent fitness concerns.

João Pedro withdrew from Brazil’s squad after suffering an injury, while James missed the beginning of a Chelsea training session earlier in the week.

Alonso, however, said neither player had been ruled out and that final decisions would be taken after Chelsea’s last training session ahead of the match.

The Chelsea manager said the club would remain cautious with João Pedro but confirmed that the Brazilian forward could still feature.

João Pedro has made a strong start to the Premier League campaign, recording three goals and three assists in his first four league appearances.

Alonso also played down concerns surrounding James, saying his absence from part of Tuesday’s training was a decision taken by the club rather than confirmation of a serious setback.

Midfielder Moisés Caicedo is also being monitored as he continues his recovery, while Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson are among players expected to be assessed before the final squad is selected.

Chelsea travel to Brentford hoping to return to winning ways after drawing 2-2 with Hull City in their previous Premier League fixture.
