Veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs dies at 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84.

The celebrated actor, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his death in a statement shared on Instagram, describing the veteran actor as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.

The family expressed gratitude for Jacobs’ life and legacy while appealing to bloggers and social media users to respect their privacy during the period of mourning.

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs built an acting career spanning more than five decades and became one of the most respected figures in Nigerian film.

Before becoming a prominent figure in Nollywood, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and worked extensively in British theatre and television.

His early career included appearances in British television productions and international films before he returned to Nigeria and became an influential figure in the country’s developing film industry.

Jacobs became widely recognised for portraying kings, chiefs, fathers and other authoritative characters in numerous Nollywood productions.

Together with his wife and fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, Jacobs also co-founded Lufodo Group, a media and performing arts organisation involved in developing creative talent.

In 2011, Jacobs received the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.

He was also honoured with the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for his contribution to African cinema.

In 2021, Silva publicly revealed that her husband had been diagnosed with Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

Jacobs is survived by his wife, children and family.
