British-Ghanaian rapper Sway DaSafo dies at 44

British rapper and producer Sway DaSafo has died at the age of 44.

The musician, whose real name was Derek Andrew Safo, was born in North London to Ghanaian parents and became an influential figure in British hip-hop.

His death was confirmed in a tribute by the MOBO Awards, which described him as an important artist and champion of British music.

A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Sway made history in 2005 when, while still an independent artist without a released debut album, he became the first unsigned performer to win Best Hip-Hop Act at the MOBO Awards.

His victory came against internationally established artists and helped raise his profile within the growing UK hip-hop scene.

He released his debut album, This Is My Demo, in 2006.

One of his best-known songs, Little Derek, reached the UK Singles Chart and became an important record in his early career.

Sway went on to release several projects and collaborate with artists including Ed Sheeran, Kano, Akon and Riz Ahmed.

He also worked behind the scenes in the music industry and played a role in supporting emerging artists.

The rapper also appeared in acting roles, including the television series Top Boy.

Tributes have continued to be shared by musicians, fans and organisations connected to the British music industry.

MOBO said Sway would retain a special place in its history and offered condolences to his family and loved ones
