Tinubu to address Nigerians October 1 as FG announces low-key Independence celebration
President Bola Tinubu is expected to address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast on October 1 as the Federal Government prepares for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to organise activities for the commemoration.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume said this year’s Independence celebrations would be low-key, while also providing an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s history and the contributions of the country’s founding figures.
The programme is scheduled to begin with a World Press Conference on September 24.
A Juma’at service is scheduled for September 25, followed by a church service on September 27 and an Independence Day public lecture on September 30.
Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast is scheduled for October 1.
The Federal Government said the anniversary would also be used to highlight programmes and reforms being implemented by the administration amid Nigeria’s economic and social challenges.
The inter-ministerial committee is chaired by the SGF and includes senior government officials responsible for finance, information, interior, foreign affairs, security and other areas.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960.
