Christian Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg to be closer to family after June collapse

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen has left German club Wolfsburg by mutual consent as he continues his recovery following his on-field collapse during an international match in June.

Wolfsburg confirmed that the 34-year-old and the club had agreed to terminate his contract early.

Eriksen’s deal had originally been scheduled to run until June 2027.

The midfielder collapsed during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine in June and briefly lost consciousness.

Eriksen later explained that his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, or ICD, delivered a shock as designed and said the incident was different from the cardiac arrest he suffered while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020 in 2021.

Following the June incident, Eriksen returned to Denmark for rehabilitation and has not played competitively since.

In announcing his Wolfsburg departure, he said being close to his family in Denmark was particularly important to him at this stage.

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent in 2025 and made 34 appearances across all competitions.

He scored three goals and registered 10 assists during his time with the German club.

Before joining Wolfsburg, Eriksen played for clubs including Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Brentford and Manchester United.

Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hecking said the club agreed to Eriksen’s request and praised the midfielder for the impression he made during his time with the team
