EFCC declares former pension reform chief Abdulrasheed Maina wanted again

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has declared former pension reform task force chairman Abdulrasheed Maina wanted over an alleged case of receiving stolen property.

The EFCC announced the development in a public notice signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.

The commission said Maina, 61, is wanted in connection with an alleged case involving receiving stolen property, but the latest notice did not disclose further details about the property involved or when the alleged offence occurred.

The anti-graft agency appealed to members of the public with useful information about Maina’s whereabouts to contact any EFCC office, the police or other security agencies.

This is not the first time Maina has been declared wanted by the commission.

He previously became the subject of a major EFCC prosecution involving pension funds and was convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2021.

Justice Okon Abang sentenced him to concurrent prison terms resulting in an effective eight-year sentence after finding him guilty of money-laundering offences.

Before that conviction, Maina had also left Nigeria while facing trial and was later arrested in Niger Republic and returned to the country.

Punch reports that the Nigerian Correctional Service subsequently confirmed his release from custody in February 2025 after he had served part of the sentence, with the service citing applicable remission provisions and conduct in custody.

The EFCC’s latest declaration concerns a newly stated allegation of receiving stolen property, and the commission has not publicly established in the notice whether it is connected to Maina’s previous pension-related case.
