Couple and Their 5 Year Old Daughter Drowns in a Neglected Canal in Ogun State

Published

A five-year-old girl and a couple have drowned in an uncovered canal at the Ewekoro end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State.

The little girl, identified as Aliyah Hussein, was returning from Abeokuta with her parents penultimate Sunday when she and her mother slipped on the edge of the canal and fell into it.

Our correspondent gathered that a yet-to-be-identified couple also drowned last Monday in the canal, as residents of Ewekoro lamented the failure of the state authorities to put a slab on the open part of the canal and guard it with iron bars so that pedestrians would not fall into it.

Aliyah’s father, Oseni, said his family was returning from Abeokuta when it rained heavily in the area and caused a traffic gridlock.

Oseni added that his wife was seriously injured, and would also have died but for the quick intervention of other pedestrians who struggled to pull her out.

Oseni, who described his deceased daughter as his joy, said the management of a cement factory in the area, who reportedly dug the canal, did not show sympathy to his family.

He said, “The incident happened around 8pm on Sunday. We were in a bus coming from Abeokuta when it started raining and there was a heavy traffic so we decided to take motorcycles to Ifo where we lived.

“I got a motorcycle to Papa and left while my wife, our first son and Aliyah also took a motorcycle. Aliyah was asleep so my wife carried her on her back. When we got to the canal, the motorcyclist’s hands were unstable because of the flood and my wife alighted from the motorcycle.

“The motorcyclist rode his bike to the other side of the road and my wife and daughter were attempting to cross the road to meet him when she slipped on the uncovered part of the canal and fell. There is an open part of the canal, which is supposed to be covered and guarded with iron bars but has been neglected. My wife did not see it because of the flood.

“It was our first child who observed that my wife and daughter had fallen into the canal and he immediately raised the alarm. When people rallied round them, they were able to pull out my wife, but we did not see Aliyah again.

“We continued searching for her till Monday. She was found dead on Monday evening and has been buried. She was a bright girl and she was just five years, and eight months.

“When we went to see the management of the cement company to lodge a complaint, we did not see anyone to complain to. All they needed to do was to put a slab on that uncovered part and use iron bars to demarcate the canal from the road.”

When PUNCH Metro visited the canal, a resident, who identified herself simply as Matron, showed our correspondent bones suspected to be remains of people who had fallen into the canal in past months.

She added that Aliyah’s corpse was recovered at the back of a cement company in the area a day after the incident.

She said, “The slab on the canal does not cover the entire surface, and during heavy rains, the flood covers that part and pedestrians who are not familiar with the terrain fall easily into the canal.

“A couple still fell and drowned last Monday. It is wickedness on the part of the authorities and the cement company who are supposed to undertake the fixing of the iron bars. How many people will drown in this canal before the proper thing is done?”

When contacted, the Ogun State Commissioner for Works, Lekan Adegbite, said he could not get the exact location of the canal, adding that general construction work was ongoing at the Ewekoro end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday ordered a 30-year-old man, Garba Aliyu, to sweep the court premises for three weeks for stealing women’s purse.

Aliyu was convicted and sentenced after he pleaded guilty to theft. The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, said the convict’s plea had saved the court the pains of a prolonged prosecution, adding that the punishment would have been more severe if he had not pleaded guilty.

Emmanuel said that in arriving at the sentence, the court took into consideration the fact that the convict was a first time offender who was remorseful. He also advised him to be of good behavior, stressing that the court frowned at acts of violence.

“Desist from such acts in future and become a better citizen and human being,’’ he advised.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that on May 7, the convict criminally trespassed into the shop of one Adanna Ebuka located at Kano Road along Ahmadu Bello Way Kaduna.

Leo said that the convict went into the shop and stole a purse belonging to the complainant while pretending to buy a loaf of bread. He added that during police investigation, the said purse was recovered from the convict.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

Nigerian singer Mayorkun has publicly responded to the arrest of controversial influencer Nicki DaBarbie, strongly denying her allegations of misconduct.

In a recent tweet, the artist expressed his disbelief at the accusations and announced his intention to pursue legal action against DaBarbie, despite her current detention.

Mayorkun clarified that he has never encountered Nicki DaBarbie in person and was entirely unaware of her existence until the allegations surfaced.

Addressing the serious accusation that he and fellow artist Skiibii attempted to spike her drink for ritualistic purposes, Mayorkun emphasized his innocence and condemned the ease with which such claims spread online.

Reacting to the allegation, Mayorkun said; “You know, I was going to let this remain as a court case but when I checked the comments under some of the blogs where these ridiculous allegations were posted, I was quickly reminded of how gullible most people are on the internet and how they are ready to run along, spreading any negative news without any form of clarity.

“Just for the record, I never met that person on the said day, still never seen that person till this day, never knew about that person’s existence not until those allegations came up.. yet she claimed I put ‘something’ in her drink.
A lot of people believed that story and you think I’ll let this libellous claim fly? Hell fucking NO!

“I took this time off because I didn’t want to act out based off of emotions, because if I did; I’ll definitely act out of character and that is not who I am.

“For weeks; I’ve been getting calls from brands I work with, colleagues, friends & family about this rubbish and you know what makes it worse? You social media commentators, internet police, even people I used to think I’m cool with.. scrambling for the tiniest bit of clout and relevance, cluelessly jumping on anything not bothered if it’s someone’s life or career on the line; it might be yours tomorrow.

“I wanna re-instate, I have never seen this person before even as I am typing this! I still haven’t set my eyes on this person.. Like what else can I say? How else can I prove this?

“There’s no need for me to ask for an apology where I won’t get any. I just needed to say this publicly and get it off my chest.. cos if it was a case of ‘cancellation’ as many people are quick to do, I for don go back to dey find work for bank.

“But as they didn’t wait to hear my side of the story before they slandered my name, I would keep the same energy and not listen to anyone’s opinion while I press full charges.. even though I’m aware she’s remanded in prison at the moment but not on my own charge.. YET!”
